Suspension advisories on MOT

In 2006 a colleague of mine had a 2003 Mini Cooper from new. I lost count of the number of times I picked her up from the BMW garage on my way to work because something was wrong with it. Total piece of junk.

She took it for its first MOT with 12k on the clock to the Ambulance HQ in Preston. They rang her and said they weren't prepared to let her drive car because the top mounts were worn, a bolt had sheared on one of the suspension arms and one of the drop links was loose. The car had been in to BMW for suspension knocking a couple of days earlier! I think they just used to wash it and give it back to her. The MOT guy got the BMW dealer to trailer it away, fix it and bring it back for another MOT.

Bloody hell your attitude leaves a lot to be desired sometimes, Clarkey.
Really?

I've had an advisory of a kinked brake hose for a couple of years, no doubt I'll get it again when MOT is due next month. Doesn't mean it's on its way out.

Had an advisory on a steering ball joint a couple of MOTs back. Wasn't picked up on the last MOT. I guess it depends who is doing the MOT. Doesn't mean it needs urgent attention.

I got some advisory for offside track rod having some 'play'

No idea what it means or if its serious

So, you are cool with sharing the road with cars on dodgy suspension, steering and brakes then?

Yes, really. The guy came on here asking for advice, admitting he doesn't know much about the subject at hand, and clearly isn't the font of all knowledge like you..

Rude and arrogant responses aren't particularly necessary. It's not the first time either.

My Scorp has for the last 5 mot's had an advisory for "slight play in steering rack".

I've not crashed yet.

Bingo! - That's all I want from an MOT.

Is it dangerous? Then it should fail and I'll get that fixed.
Is it cosmetic? Then I don't care. Give me an advisory, but I'll just ignore it.

An advisory is not for cosmetic faults. An advisory typically says a part has degraded and whilst not yet an MOT failure it could become so before the next MOT.

Why would they leak oil?

Because the description of "sliding bush or gland" points to the bush that supports the damper rod at the top of the strut body. i.e. the bit the damper rod slides in and out. Dampers have oil in them, if the seal at the top starts leaking (say, due to a worn out bush) then the oil will leak out.
