America is not a country rather a united collection of countrys/states, as such they have never been independant, from us yes. Ireland was independant but it was not independance that sorted Ireland out, it was the EU. That same EU which is payed for by British and Germany tax payers.

No - but the US is slightly more than "counties/regions". But I don't fully support the "not a country" argument.
