Makes me laugh when it stars out things in the middle of words as it thinks it's a swear - someone earlier wrote about buying their girlfriend a "s****y" bracelet - I thought he'd put a rude word there but it turns out he meant sw + anky

I didn't fully star out a swear word i put F then stars and i got a 2 day suspension which is lame.

Technically speaking, they do that on TV because of the exact reason of swearing filters on here. They make up those words so to pass the watershed and it DOES get pass the watershed. So strictly speaking it is not a swear word, but we all know what it means. Same as when someone says Sugar instead of ****.

The FAQ is pretty clear on it though, you should fully star all swearing and don't use disguised swearing, you may think it's lame but at least there should be no doubt about what to do if you really want to use/indicate a swear word.

hux: if you're still in doubt (abbreviations are almost certainly in the category of disguised swearing) then feel free to email a moderator and ask them.

It is rather silly though, as the asterisks themselves are disguised swearing.

What purpose do asterisks actually serve, anyway? Are we all supposed to pretend to be so stupid that we can be fooled by it, like a dog not understanding what a word is when it's spelled out rather than spoken?

I realise that OcUK can impose whatever arbritrary rules they please on their forums and I'm not saying they shouldn't be able to. Although I hope they don't make it a requirement to post in iambic pentameter

C'mon people, read the very thread you're in. It was added to the swear filter for the reason given above by Freefaller and quoted for truth is along much the same lines, it's basically just a PC+1 - for me it adds nothing to the discussion but I realise I'm probably in a minority on this one so if it's reviewed and found acceptable then so be it.

I'd love a day where you had to post in iambic pentameter - just to see if it's possible for most of us.

I think (and I could well be wrong about this) the reason is that it's nominally a family forum so discussions along certain themes are forbidden or discouraged, pictures that go beyond certain bounds of taste and decency are removed (if noticed before anyone points out that some slip through the net) and swear words are hidden. It's not because people don't know what they are or that such things exist, that would be denying an obvious truth but they don't need to be explicitly shown either - it's a good exercise in being able to show your distaste for something without recourse to swearing. It also has the benefit of making threads safe for browsing at work - maybe your work doesn't care but some do.
