Hi OCUK,

im just asking for suggestions of beer, basically i went to Belgium last year and realy enjoyed Hoegaarden, i buy it here but it seems it doesnt travel so well as its not on par with what i had in belgium.

I would still take it over any of the mainstream larger brands in the UK though, just getting a bit bored of it now so does anyone have some suggestions on similar tasting white beers? hopefully ones that i can get easily in sheffield

Thanks

Erdinger is one of the best and also the most easily available (at least around here). There are of course better wheat beers but they tend to be expensive and hard to get hold of.

I will warn you though: Once you've got a taste for the better wheat beers, hoegaarden will taste like urine in comparison :)

edit: Paulaner is also often available (might be under the name Bavarian Wheat Beer in some places when on tap). A lot of pubs do 'white' bears too, which are often wheat beers in disguise. Be aware that many wheat bears are also available in dunkel (dark) versions, which is very different to the standard beer. You may like it or may not...personally I often don't.

Another vote for Paulaner here, forgot about that one.

Why not just get yourself down to a quality beer shop/bar and try a load of different stuff? It's the way forward. It's also the way to spend loads on nice beers and alienate yourself from your Fosters/Carling drinking drinking friends. :(

I don't like most normal beers, but really have taken to wheat beers.

Hoegaarden, Leffe Blonde, Blue Moon and Erdinger are my favs.

I bought hoegaarden rosee at the weekend, not looking at the percentage or anything I just assumed it'd be normal beer but a special edition.
What I got was like ribena and beer at a lowly 3% horrible ****.

I do like a nice erdinger though, wheat beer is awesome.

Make sure you follow the directions on the back of the bottle and properly swish it around as it says.

Don't drink it out of the bottle, pour it into a proper glass.

Hoegaarden glass's are like a goldsifh bowl they're so wide at the top, guess it makes it easier to do the above good advice. Tastes like pear drop sweet's to me, lovely. Not tried any of the recommened above, a shopping trip is in order cheers.

I tried Wieckse Witte when I was over in The Hague, very nice tipple.

It was originally a Dutch brewery that made it (De Ridder) but they've been since bought out by Heineken so might be easier to get hold of over here now.

edit - Just read the brewery was closed, so maybe not!

just went to the local sainsburys and only wheat bears there where hoegaarden , blue moon and Erdinger

bought 2 bottles of Erdinger will try blue moon after

thanks
