Symbian 3 + Nokia N8 = WOW!

this touch screen feature looks amazing, does any other phone do anything like this?

meh, good idea but it's very slow and inaccurate i don't think it'd be usable for anything. i notice he didn't touch anything in the middle of the screen at a guess because his body would mess it up so it's useless. also nokia really need to add a better skin to symbian.

the N8 has been delayed by up to a month, was due to launch this weekend on the website and next weekend in stores. will now launch in 3/4 weeks time.

ouch. wonder what happened to cause the delay so late.

i got a funny feeling Nokia don't want to admit they shouldn't have bought Symbian so are still clinging onto it, but one day very soon will announce a trial of an andoird os. unless i read it wrong they've got a new ceo so i hope he isn't too proud to say that they'll be switching over. nokia make great phones and paired with andoird os they'll do great.

as a side thought, do motorola still sell phones? it's been years since i've seen anyone with one and i never hear about them any more.

Motorola have turned out a few pretty decent android phones recently, the droid series.

I just can't see symbian catching up to android now, for competition's sake I hope it does, but I just can't see it.

Nokia came into work this week (I work at T-Mobile). I had a play about with the device and I was left distinctly underwhelmed. Symbian 3 seemed ever so slightly unresponsive (not sure if this was the software or the touchscreen tbh) and when you compare this to how snappy the iPhone 4 and Desire are it really shows.

The whole phone just screamed 'meh...'

I could have told you this when it was announced.

:p

Yeah Motorola were screwed as their phones were rubbish, but they've come storming back with their Droid phones, I have the Droid here and the best thing I can say is that it barely registers that it's a Motorola, really well put-together bit of kit, feels solid as anything and <3 vanilla Android too so uber-fast updates.

Is that the Droid X Rich? You being in the States and all :p

No man, Meego is basically Maemo with added x86 support (so it'll run on Intel chips as well as ARM ones).
I think it'll get a new UI too, but that's about it.

The UI is the the thing though, if thats good and its on good hardware, that will do Nokia wonders.

The amount of fanboyism in this thread is ridiculous! I too prefer Android to Symbian, but "I don't like it cause everything's square"? Seriously?

The videos of Symbian^3 that I've seen seem to show that it's overcome its worst problems: its laggy unresponsiveness, and its crazy interface with even more menu layers and WinMo!

And I'd agree that it comes with more functionality out of the box than a "vanilla Android" phone, apps notwithstanding. For people in countries where you still have to pay through the nose for data and therefore won't really download and install an app on the spur of the moment, that's important, as it is for those who want everything to work. (Of course that's not most of us, being all computer geeks:))

So don't get me wrong, these new phones will sell like hotcakes, and for a lot of people they'll actually be the best choice! But I still think Symbian^3 is a lost cause in the long term because its other main problem remains unsolved: device fragmentation means it's hard to find apps that'll work on your phone, and, even though Nokia are expending a lot of effort improving the Ovi store, I reckon it'll be hard for them to attract developers with Android and iOS so established, WP7 coming, and Nokia themselves also juggling Meego into the bargain (which will probably turn out to be their long-term commitment).

PS. Just read this: http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/nokias-qt-4-7-app-framework-goes-gold-encourages-symbian-and-m/
If it will really help with device fragmentation then it _should_ lure more devs in, after all, if you count all Symbian devices there's more of them out there than there are iOS, Android, and webOS combined! (and I'm talking by like an order of magnitude more!)

TBH I really liked the N900 UI... the only thing that turned me off software-wise was the lack of decent portrait support. (Hardware-wise I thought the keyboard was a bit mediocre, but that's a different question) In its time (13 months ago), it was up there with the state of the art IMHO, but I have to admit that with the release of Google Voice Commands for free it's been leapfrogged by Android.

That's basically Android's main perk in my opinion - not the apps store, that has a few minor aids and funky distractions, but Google's enormous codeshop constantly adding MAJOR, experience-transforming extensions to the basic Android OS, and so far for free! It remains to be seen if Nokia/Intel will be able to compete, although they have the advantage in that Meego will be more open and capable than Android. For instance, the N900 might have excellent Skype integration built-in, but Android has leapfrogged it with Google Voice, which not only does the same things Skype does, but they've thrown in free calls to US landlines until December too!

That IS pretty impressive technically, considering how many years it took Microsoft to develop the same thing for the 360!:D

I don't see what all the fuss is with hooking up smartphones to touchscreens though, everyone going on about how HDMI ports are a must-have feature etc. When are you EVER likely to load an HD movie onto your phone and then play it on your TV? The only thing I would ever consider using it for is an impromptu Powerpoint presentation, but only if I absolutely desperately had to because they only have an HDTV rather than a monitor or projector with a VGA or DVI port so I could use a laptop like normal people!

Nah, it's the original Droid - I thought about the Droid X but it was $250 more and I didn't really like how massive it was :p Also thought about waiting for the Droid 2 which looks pretty good but was turned off by MotoBLUR rubbish on top of stock Android and that would have been $250 odd more expensive too (My Droid was free with free activation too).

The Droids (1, 2, X and the Incredible) are massively popular over here though, and Verizon is pretty much known as the best network for 3G and overall coverage - and it's CDMA so if you want a smartphone on Verizon it's either Palm (but the guys in the shop said don't bother lol), Android or Blackberry.

well i know some people who are useless at downloading movies, so i download them for them, this way i would certainly use the feature. i woulld put the movie on my phone, go round, directly hook it up to their tv and watch the movie with them. i do this currently by using a portable usb hard drive and their pc which is hooked up to the tv, with it being capable on the phone, i would no longer need to carry 2 devices but 1, which i always carry anyway.

That said, my missus has the 5800 and it's development has been startling. The phone has flash lite now and can do most of the stuff my N900 does already. Full browsing on most websites without bother, good uploading, supports landscape and portait browsingand qwerty too. Add in a very very good free sat-nav and I can't see why people whine about Symbian so much. Her phone is plenty quick enough.

I had a 5800, with all the updates. It was bearable but going to android was a massive difference for me. My Motorola Dext is low end and pretty dated now (though I am running a custom 2.1 ROM), but it's miles better - Capacitive screen makes a big difference, and the web browser is leagues faster and nicer to use than the symbian one was.
Gmail account and contacts integration is really good for me, but the real killer is the Apps. Being able to do things like run an ftp server on my phone (swiftp) so I can manage my music remotely over wifi rocks, I also love remote desktop, wifi tethering, XBMC remote etc.

The only thing I actually miss is being able to use Skype over wifi now that fring doesn't support it.

i'll phone them on monday, no doubt they are closed today.

I've been looking at early reviews/comments on the N8 and it seems like its decent enough from a hardware perspective but is pulled up by largely rubbish software and features.

Shocker... :p

Still, I dont think you people getting it will be too upset, and I do still want a go on one!

I take it its the American pro iOS/Andriod blogs like gizmodo and engadget?

This video makes gizmodo look silly:

Not to mention engadgets comparison of the N8 camera vs the iPhone 4's
