Symbian 3 + Nokia N8 = WOW!

Specs look ok but after using the i8910 i'm not touching symbian again, not until Nokia really push developers to make some decent apps and games.

There arent many for symbian compared to Android/iOS and most of them are junk.

Actually, I have seen those other things but the provisional review (there was an issue with something so it doesn't have a final score, but it is a full review) from TechRadar seems relatively fair.

Obviously there is only so much you can take from reviews but I have in the past found them fairly accurate.

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/nokia-n8-692448/review

For
  • Great camera
  • Superb battery life
  • Clear and crisp screen
  • Decent audio output
  • Stylish aluminium casing
  • HDMI-out port

Against

  • Average virtual keyboards
  • unintuitive UI
  • Unimpressive internet experience
  • Confusing connection management
  • Awful social network integration

I dont take anything as completely accurate until I've tried the phone but it seems to be hit and miss and has a fairly boring UI unlike Android and iOS.

Good news about the battery though, it seems they have followed Apple's lead in producing a fairly decent smartphone battery, though 2 days with moderate usage isn't what I would consider 'superb', but good none the less.

The camera is without a doubt very good as was to be expected, but still not close to the real camera quality we can perhaps expect one day.

Its not a phone for me nor do I consider it one of the 'top' smart phones (granted, I havent tried one properly yet), especially with the Desire HD coming out imminently, but people who dont care about software and want a smartphone with a decent camera will surely fancy it.

Yes, it is a good camera, I never said otherwise!

It just depends whether having a camera that good will outweigh the other more sloppy features of the phone, for some it will, for some it wont.

Still, you know HTC will now just steal it and slap it on something for release in January, hm, the HTC Desire HD SuperCamera2000 edition? :p

Yea given that its been announced since april and its STILL not even out yet (), I'm not sure it will hold the top spot for long with the Panasonic's Lumix phone coming out soon.

Are Panasonic planning on selling their Lumix phones in Europe?

Hopefully!

Change the Japcentric layout, remove the slider and plop a fast Leica lens on the front then I'm in. :)
(Wonder how much the Leica branded variant would cost? No doubt it'll make the £600 iPhone look dirt cheap :p)

However, it should be noted that we found ourselves hitting the internet a lot less frequently than on other devices we've had on test.

Ah, that explains the battery life, if the desire had a crap browser I'd be getting 2 days too... (well over 1 anyway ;))
Personally I'd take a fast cortex A8/A9, power sapping software and 1 days usage over 2-3 days of crippled software everyday of the week.

It's a real shame as the N8 could've been bloody awesome :(

Gotta say (and i might be the first) i think it looks ugly! :o

I'm in agreement with a lot of comments in here about Nokia needing to ditch symbian and advance MeeGo. I came from using (and really abusing) a N95 8gig and totally loved symbian, the apps and the features of that phone during that time... (2-4 years ago)

I'm now on the N900 (i'm a nokia fanboy and have been for 10+ years) and i'm very underwhelmed by the whole thing... Don't know about the other N900 owners but i feel very abandoned - the N900 (well maemo) has/had huge potential that Nokia didn't even seem interested in as soon as MeeGo was announced, i'd kindof hoped for an option to update to a version of MeeGo but that's definately not on the cards anymore.

I feel the N900 is a dead duck, namely due to the lack of development and apps for it.

Apple has really set an industry standard with the amount of apps available and development, even though their devices are years behind (technology wise) their main competitors... The hype around their devices helps them to keep the price high alongside their (imo) anal way of keeping developers in check means i'll not make an iphone my next choice, if there is an Android alternative. I'll be even happier if the N8 swings more developers Nokias way as that'll pave the way for the N9 (which will be my upgrade of choice).

Guess i'm looking at swopping to an Android handset in the next 3 months (voda contract upgrade) until the N9 is announced (hopefully) in time for my 2012 upgrade... (famous last words!) ;)

So what is the verdict from people who actually bought it?

its great, full of lots of amazing functions and add ons.

built in fm transmitter - works great and is clear so long as you manage to get your frequency right.

camera - is amazing, you do need to quickly play around with the settings every time before you take a picture because auto never seems to get it right. so if your taking a landscape shot, choose landscape, portrait choose that, etc. it takes 1 second to do so not exactly a big complaint but the auto feature doesnt work well, but is fixed by setting it up manually.

battery - seems to last forever and thats with power saving mode not on, with it on i reckon i could get a week out of it and this is coming from an n96 which would last a day in normal mode and 2 with power saving on.

apps - has everything i need already installed, free sat nav being the main one. i use my phone as a phone, txt's and calls mainly with occasional use as an mp3/sat nav. im not one of those idiots who sits playing about with his phone for hours on end. it does everything i need it to do very well.

i tested the hdmi out and it works well, but ive not used it for a movie yet, might do next week so will let you know how i get on.

its a bit heavy, but it feels solidly built, like a german car.

for me its the perfect phone, it even came with need for speed shift and some other game free.

HTC!? With a good camera, are you joking, their cameras are dire, I also find their hardware sub par. Nokia know their hardware ( but not software)

Which colour did you get? I ordered the blue one so gotta wait till Nov to get it :(

Also did you see the news that ALL S^3 devices will get S^4 upgrades when they come out? http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/12215_Nokia_accelerates_Qt_focus_con.php

Nokia have given up on this now. They know its a losing battle

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/nokia-refines-development-stategy-adopts-html5-in-qt-and-ends-s/

I can see the N8 not being supported that much by nokia, They have history doing this sorta stuff

EDIT: Getting my wores crossed, They are not bother with S4 but sintead just giving S3 upgrades when they are available

This is good news for the N8 - there will be no Symbian 4, ie the N8 will continue to be upgraded and will get all of the new features that were going in to Symbian 4, its actually great news for any new Symbian phones.:)

i ordered silver.

i need to find a decent case/pouch for it.

im currently using one of my ipod touch socks and have an invisibleshield on its way in the post.

there seems to be no decent looking ones, which preserve how professional the phone looks. i dont want one of those cheap tacky silicone things. i want something which looks decent and does a decent job of protecting the phone.

looks like i might just stick with the invisible shield and sock for just now and see if any pop up.

there are plenty of apps for this phone, i just dont have a need for any of them, as i already have an ipod touch which i use at home. when im out and about im generally too busy with life than to be messing about on my phone, so i only use it when i need it, e.g. calls and txt's.

not tested the sat nav yet, will try to do so within the next week.

Tried this in the shop today.

My.God. Its awful, Symbian I mean! Ive been using an N900 for the past year, forgot how backwards Symbian is. SUCH a pity as the hardware is fantastic, the camera really is something.

Indeed, if it ran Android and not the mess that is Symbian, I'd have one already. :)
