Synology DS916+ & 4 x 4TB Drives

OMGGGGGGGGGGGG

Now have the Plex server setup on my home network and I cannot believe how seriously awesome it is. All of my stuff (or should I say, most of it that is named correctly) categorised and streaming to all of my devices without a hitch... it's like my own personal Netflix. I streamed a 17GB MKV without any issues through my Samsung TV and I am happy as a pig in mud. All of my BBC wildlife collection in one easy place. Heaven. :D

Haven't really even started to dig into the Synology apps yet, but my first task will be to get remote access up and running... probably via VPN.

One thing though is that the HGST hard drives are damn loud when writing... I put the NAS next to my bed as a temporary measure while I got it up and running and man... I need to get it hidden in my desk asap, lol...

I will also look into a cloud backup service soon to protect all of my data... thinking Back Blaze B2 but will do some research.

Really looking forward to exploring the potential of the NAS. :)

I told you PLEX works like a dream, so much easier than Kodi if you simply need something to index and present your movies, tv stuff and music in a nice wrapper. I've never needed (or wanted) to access the device externally of my house as it stores big stuff and my small stuff, documents, scans etc are also in Cloud storage, which I sync back to the NAS for extra backup protection. I have mine in my office so can't comment on the noise, but I have to say I have never heard the DS916 make a noise, probably as my PC fans are 432324320840392849032849032848 decibels.

OK, VPN up and running combined with 2-factor authentication... ******* awesome. :D

Woah.......Don't leave it there old boy.......How did you do it. I'm getting myself into a muddle with mine at the moment. Seriously slow transfers over gigabit network 10MB/s and trying to set up my CCTV without it sending 100 emails a day because the sun has caused a shadow....

I may have also messed up only getting 2tb HDD's using SHR and I'm down to 4tb before adding my media

One of these ought to do you. Can drop down to another model if they are a tad pricey http://powerquality.eaton.com/Products-services/Backup-Power-UPS/Ellipse-PRO.aspx?cx=101

Thanks mate I'll take a look. :)

I used this guide here mate

And yeah... buying 4x 2TB may not be the wisest idea as you give yourself no headroom and will reach capacity very quickly. It's worth investing in larger drives, even if you start with 2x 4TB and then add two more later as you get the funds.

Well, after buying a travel laptop (the excellent little Lenovo 701S) I have really now started to use the power of the DS916+ NAS. I VPN onto my home network and from there the world is (as long as I have a serviceable internet connection) my oyster. I can share files, office spreadsheets, stream music and movies, backup all machines, use the cloud drive as my own personal dropbox etc etc... it's pretty damn awesome. :)
