Before I start looking at used prices further, any views on the DS920+ units, I'm wanting to leverage 4 x 3TB WD plus drives I have surplus as a replication target from my 1821+ unit that has 6 x 12TB drives. Obviously it won't fit everything, but the critical items will fit such as Docs, Photos and Plex media.

The other ones I've been keeping on are DS423, 423+ and 1621+. The 1621+ prices seem to vary wildly

I have been using a DS920+ as my first NAS since 2020 and it's not skipped a beat.

I chose to replace the fans with Noctua versions once the warranty expired as I spend most of my working day about half a meter from it and had the fans anyway. I also dropped a RAM stick in too once I decided I was going to more than just use it as a storage unit.

Inevitably the only potential issue is I have filled all 4 bays (SHR-1) so my next conundrum will be bigger drives or bigger unit and extra drives if/once I fill the remaining ~10TB and dependent on the pricing of both options.

Unsure of your history with Synology but the drive database script is essential to avoid annoyance on "unsupported" drives and you might need to do some fiddling via SSH to set up NVMe drives as anything other than cache (not hard).
