All,

I have a serious problem with my PC. I believe it is the graphics card. The problem has arisen today.

My bro was playing a game when the PC froze and displayed a blue screen (he didnt note down the details).

Since then the PC will not boot into Windows, it gets as far as the green sliders (loading screen) then the desktop but only for a few seconds. A bluescreen appeared when I tried to get into Windows it stated nvlddmkm.sys error.

The PC can boot into safe mode and low resolution mode fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers but it does not fix the problem.

It did work briefly for a few minutes with a fresh install of the drivers but when I tested the system with a Counter Strike Source stress test the PC froze and displayed a blank black screen.

The graphics card is a 768Mb XFX 8800GTX XXX PCIE.

Any ideas what to do?

Possibly PSU as well? Could be causing issues maybe =/ It's a long shot, but worth trying really.

I don't suppose you can try the card in a different system can you?

Afraid not.

I'm running MemTest and no errors so far.

I had a few artifacts on screen when I tried to boot into normal Windows again before it froze and a black screen.

Seems to be pointing towards the GFX Card don't you think?

After reading up about the nvlddmkm.sys error on google it seems it may actually be a software thing. Have you updated your drivers lately and are you on Vista?

when uninstalling drivers use driver sweeper to make sure all nvidia contents are deleted, reboot and install newest drivers out

if still failing to work try DELVIS option
Possibly PSU as well? Could be causing issues maybe

Ran memtest no issues.

I've only seen the nvlddmkm.sys bluescreen error once.

The rest of the time it's just been a frozen blank black screen.

The problem happened before the new drivers were installed, I installed the new ones to see if that would fix the problem. Plus I did run driversweeper anyway.

Could try driver cleaner pro...Uninstall everything Nvidia related (unless you have nvidia chipset drivers etc). Boot into safe mode, do the same. Then try installing some drivers again, that you know you had working...Or just download the latest again.

Otherwise it could be borked memory on the video card perhaps...Or again, your PSU being flakey.

Thanks for the advice guys.

What I don't understand is that in safe mode and low resolution mode everything works fine.

But as soon as I load into normal Windows Vista it freezes after a few seconds on the desktop to a blank black screen.

Temps are fine running nice and cool, cooler than I realised :)

I've emailed the supplier were I got the kit from so I'll see what they say.

the main reason safe mode works, is cause safe mode doesn't load all the drivers for an o/s that are normally loaded...It just loads the bare minimum :)

Just tried the PC, now get funny characters on screen during boot and blue lines on the screen.

Looks like the gfx card is borked, going to buy a cheap gfx card on the highstreet and test it on my system.

Thats Nvidia mate.

I built a system for a friend recently with an 8800gt. It wouldnt let me install any nvidia drivers (tryed both xp and vista) because if i did at boot just after the loading bar it would blue screen with NV*******.sys coming up or just black screen. It would only work in safe mode where it uses a default windows driver.

I told him to send it back and get an ATI HD 3870 XT, installed perfectly straight away.

Nvidia are fine...I've only had ATI cards prior to my latest (other than the MX440), And its fine, so saying that is just ludicrous.

It's called bad luck, nothing else.

And to top that off, how do you explain my X1900 suddenly dying then? Maybe cause ATI suck? I think not :)
