Basically, I have a lot of files and work that I don't want getting into the wrong hands if I have a break in or nosey friend. What is the best encryption that will totally prevent the best of computer hacker get into my computer and will it slow down performance ?

I don't care about email encryption and public keys etc, I just want a highly secure password protection upon start up that prevents even the top guys gaining access. Or maybe boot my OS on a SSD and encrypt my secondary hard drive if it would slow down performance ?

I think Windows Ultimate has a built in Encryption thingy, failing that, truecrypt your hard drives and have a password set up for on boot plus an extra secure password for windows logon, make sure you set the administrator account password as well

Can I point out that if the police remove your computer, find it is encrypted and you refuse to give them the key you are committing a further offense.

Truecrypt.

I have encrypted drives for my off-site backups. I haven't done before/after speed tests, but I haven't noticed any performance hit.

Also, if you want to hide something from someone in plain sight, there was a program called Chameleon. It was basically winzip, only instead of having porn.zip you could give the file a front... so while it was porn.zip, it was called say accounts.xls and if you clicked the file with anything other than chameleon, you would just get accounts.zip.

That was some time ago, but depending on what you want to hide it may help.

must be encrypting accounts of some kind or another... some thing that you would not want anyone to get to or see...

OP, do you have unsecured wireless in your area??

depends on your definition of "porn"

Thats really bad dude lol

Not if I forgot the passwords ?

I'm with Sky Broadband, it seems pretty secure.

Would it be best if I use a SSD for Windows 7 and use a secondary drive that has all my personal stuff, password protected and encrypted ? But will Windows 7 SSD drive keep history or temp files that was opened or saved onto the encrypted drive ?

So which one is best ?? Truecrypt, PGP . . . ?

Sounds like you are into some serious **** dude

office 2003 / 2007 /2010 jsut put a password on the document...

if the stuff is illegal you WILL go to prison if you are investigated and dont give over the password though... also I assume if the stuff is not illegal and you are investigated but forget the password!!!! (assuming the plod want access)

What else would you need to hide so well?

I had to hide the list of presents I was gonna get my GF fro xmas as she was after finding it... but you can hide stuff from prying eyes easy without encryption!!

Nothing illegal just private and could cost me if someone stole it !

Wow what do you have to hide there :P
aes256 is prety nice

Yep, I'm thinking of TrueCrypt AES-Twofish-Serpent combo with maybe Evidence Eliminator or CyberScrub Privacy Suite to wipe my deleted files every week :) What you think ?

Accounts, client details, work, passwords . . . I'm paranoid because theres been a lot of break ins lately advertised in my local paper, some of them sound really crazy and unbelievable lol and I thought that If they see my computer through the window, they might think they can make some cash. I just want to be safe than sorry.

exactly, if you have an illegal stash of stuff, encrypt it...

if you have some patent documents about a super idea password it

if you are a big corp jsut encrypt everything

if you have jsut normal home stuff who cares? password the odd doc thats private...

encryption = possibly nightmare of a recovery if there is an issue with the drive or OS
