Just read this on RPS (link)

Pretty awesome news for SS2 fans :)

Hopefully this will help encourage some people to try the game for the first time too.

It should definitely be compatible with Win7. If not, follow the link that arc@css posted and grab SS2Tool :) It will automagically fix a lot of possible issues with the game.

Aw, it's a pity they couldn't bundle the texture and model overhauls with it, but I'll probably still buy it anyway. I only ever finished a playthrough as navy, which I believe was the easiest due the the high repair skills.

Yeah. Navy generally gave you higher hack, maintenance and potentially standard weapons skill. That combination made the game so much easier (and to anyone new I would highly recommend those as your career choices at the start) :)

Where you read its coming steam?

I've not got the link to hand right now but I'll see if I can dig it up later.

I really hope that they've done a good job with this.

It would be nice to have to have the cut scenes / videos back again (had to disable these to make the original run on Win 7)

It's not an "easy" game by any stretch - in fact it can be quite frustrating. But once you're into it. Well. You can kiss your life goodbye basically.

To be honest, with the right fixes everything worked perfectly on Win7. Even more so since the 2.4 community patch. I don't think GOG really need to do much to 'fix' this at all :)

Bought :)

I might post up a guide for getting some of the basic graphics mods working rather than do any actual work....

edit: Wow. It comes with the unofficial 2.4 update. That's both awesome and very surprising.

only mod that is going near my game is the straylight patch.

doubt i will use SHTUP the graphics are part of the era that the game was made in.

I can see your point and for new players I'd recommend the same (actually, without ADaOB too).

I'm planning to play with SecMod, SHTUP, SHMUP, Rebirth Complimented and...hmm..some others that I've forgotten for now :p

Had to buy it:

:)

My GOG collection is getting out of hand like my Steam collection tbh. Could someone list the must have mods for this?

For your first play through I'd either go with no mods or just with SHTUP and Rebirth Complimented. Neither will change gameplay but they will overhaul the graphics quite a bit.

I was going to post some links but the main site (strangebedfellows.de) is currently under heavy load from all the new SS2 players. I do have a pre-modded version of SS2 sitting around somewhere but it's probably best to wait until tomorrow and the return of the mod site.

Hi folks,

I played this game back in the day and loved it! I have just picked it up again on gog.com and will be giving it a bash on Sunday.

I see a few recommendations for mods:

SHTUP
Rebirth Complimented (is this the same as Rebirth 2?)
Straylight (does this change the gameplay much?)

Any more recommendations? :)

I also see a mention of a mod manager, is there one in particular that I should be using? Is SS Tool 4.8 necessary?

Thank you in advance for any guidance, I would really appreciate it.

Has anyone got some screenies of their game modded? Would love to see some!

Straylight/ADaOB fixes a lot of balance issues in game and will make it a lot more difficult for you if you're used to "get standard weapons to 6 and lay waste with the assault rifle" tactics :p Personally if you are going for that I would consider getting SecMod instead. It incorporates all the fixes from ADaOB but also adds in some new weapons/items and crafting. You can also repair turrets :p

Rebirth Complimented may be an out of date term now. Basically it was Rebirth with the rumbler model included and with some changes to the cyborg midwife to make it look less like a porn model and more like the original concept. I believe monkeys may have been overhauled a little too, but my memory is a little foggy on that.

SS2Tool probably isn't absolutely needed but it can make your life easier if you're planning on incorporating mods. For all of these tools (SS2Tool, ModManager, etc) I would check the strangebedfellows forums to ensure that the tools work okay with the new GOG version of SS2.

There are a few other mods you could play with - SHMUP is basically similar to SHTUP but for the in game music. Aside from that I wouldn't play with other things that much just yet. There are full new campaigns to play with eventually :)

edit: Rebirth 02 is basically the same as the complimented version. Go for 02 :)

I heard the new syndicate was pretty awful unfortunately :/ Bit of a shame as I loved the Amiga version (a real remake of that would be really awesome).

If anyone is feeling lazy I have just installed nearly all the updated graphics mods, the updated sound mod and SecMod (which includes the Straylight fixes and additional weapons/crafting options).

I've 7zipped my DataPermMods folder and uploaded it to my website:

The first archive is for first time players. It overhauls the graphics only (no SecMod).
http://linktart.co.uk/DataPermMods_new_player_friendly.7z

The second archive is for veteran players. In addition to the above it also includes SecMod. Warning: This is somewhat tougher than the original game.
http://linktart.co.uk/DataPermMods_veteran_players.7z

This includes:

SS2 Four Hundred - improves various floor/wall/etc textures.
SHTUP - improves an absolute ton of textures in the game.
Rebirth 02 - Updates lots of the enemy models and textures.
Vurt's mods - updates the space backgrounds, water, 'goo' and other objects.
SHMUP - High quality music versions based on the original game sound track.
SecMod - All of the fixes of Straylight's ADaOB mod, plus new weapons, items and crafting/modding. (Veteran players version only)

All credit obviously belongs to the original mod authors.

Brilliant, thank you for doing that! I'll give it a blast tomorrow :)

Edit: Will I have to do the SS tool thing first?

I did but I'm not sure you actually need to. There's already a DataPermMods folder in the default install so you can just try dropping the extracted files in there. If that doesn't work, delete the extracted files and then get the SS2Tool thing going on :)

You're welcome :) Hope it helps...and works ok :p

edit:

I really don't recommend this to new players but there's also a very small mod I worked years ago that basically moved around key items and changed the layout of levels slightly. I just found an old file from it that I'm pretty sure works okay. Once again, I don't recommend it to new players but if any veterans want to breath some new life into Hydroponics then feel free to try it out:

http://linktart.co.uk/HYDRO1.MIS

To install, just place it in your SS2 folder, having first backed up your original .MIS file. You should probably backup any saves too.

edit2: not compatible with SecMod. Dizzamn.

Well, after a quick drunken play I do not recommend SecMod to anyone new to the game. I may upload a slightly more noob-friendly mod folder tomorrow :p

Thanks, I would appreciate that. I've never played it all the way through, and it would be nice to have a mod collection that just enhances it a bit to make it less fugly.

I'll definitely get it sorted tomorrow :) I forgot just how much that SecMod changes - in addition to moving a few things around it fixes some of the animations for the early-on enemies - this makes them much more difficult to take on.

I didn't play this game (I was too young at the time)
Always wanted to get it at some point just because of the stupidly positive reviews it got.

Bought it, slapped a few mods on it to make the textures bearable and daym....couple of hours in and I only JUST got off, I didn't even realize what time it was till I looked at my clock and was like....holy hell....

One of the best purchases I have made for awhile....

It's really awesome. Probably the best single-player FPS of all time imo :)

Just had a quick blast with your mod folder installed FrenchTart, the secmod certainly changes a few things, I can't even find the science sector access card! lol

edit: found it, not sure how I opened the cryo chambers though :)

I'll give it a blast for a bit and see what I think, I have played the original before so the changes introduced might be welcome.

Lol. It took me a while to find those too :p I quite like the fresh challenge of it all :)

edit: uploaded a version without secmod for the new players :)

I hate this game, currently hiding from monkeys! Damn thing is on normal difficulty as well, normal! grrr. :( :p

Are you playing with or without SecMod? I'm getting absolutely hammered by everything in hard mode with SecMod near the start. Really crazy. I've completed the game before tons of times on impossible difficulty (including melee-only). Damn game :p

I think I'm going to drop my difficulty to normal too. Mostly so I can take it a bit easier and also try out as many new weapons as possible.

I'd really like a 'stay dead' mod. Something that stops the constant respawn of monsters. I clear a room out then I'll be going through my inventory sorting stuff out and the damn things are back! Don't get me wrong it adds to the 'arrgh wtf!' of the game but, now and again, I'd like to be able to clear them out so I can progress and not have to rely on my wrench all the time as I've run out of ammo!

So if you know of such a mod let me know!

The above should sort you out. It isn't compatible with ADaOB or SecMod and the like though. Possibly not a problem if you're not playing with those mods. It should be fine with SHTUP, Rebirth, etc (i.e. mods that change the graphics but not the gameplay).

Thanks Frenchtart, for the mod packs.

This game is awesome - I can see why people rave about it. Turning off the music helps, because it sometimes comes in at the wrong time. There's loads of atmosphere and creepiness with the ambient sounds.

It's not an easy game (even on easy!) so get used to the idea of quicksave. There's quite a good no-spoilers newbies guide here: http://www.shtupmod.net/newbies_guide.html

Yeah, that's a really good guide for new players. I wish it had been around when I first played through the game. Would have saved so many tears of frustration :p
