T minus 1 week until 10,000 days...

1) You'll have to point that out to me. There are no "Suuuuucccckkkk... Suckin up boy, you can suck it up, suck and suck... you litle parasite"

Didn't it take Maynard 3 weeks to recover from recording that?

There's a reason they barely ever play it live. Maynard's voice just can't cope.

As for the album, while I wouldn't rate it as highly as lateralus, it's still a good album, on the whole.
In my opinion, this is Adam/Justin/Danny's best work so far. That bassline in The Pot, the talkbox solo in Jambi, just about anything Danny does on the whole album... It's just jaw-dropping.

i've still not stopped listening to it since it came out. the tracks i like, i love. especially 10,000 days.

is it growing on you yet?

If by 'growing on me' as in, do I like it as the other albums yet then no. And it wont, ever. Because in comparison its ****. The lyrics and song subjects are **** in comparison and the music sound like Tool are covering Tool.

Overall, its a good album - but it pales compared to earlier work.

that's a shame. personally i'm really happy with it, but i can imagine you're pretty disappointed. i was quite upset when APC brought out Emotive and aMotion.

If you're not disappointed (I'm not emo, I don't get upset :p ) then what is it that 10,000 days has delivered that you were looking for, given the differences between this album and those that preceeded it... 10,000 days is at best 'average' compared to Tool's other works and I dont see how anyone could get particularly excited about it.

i need to change my sig, don't i?! :p

10,000 days has delivered me an album containing some really powerful (literally powerful, i haven't even bothered to decipher the lyrics yet) music, complemented by (in my opinion) the most beautiful voice in music. The guitar sounds brilliant, the drums are awesome, and i love that Maynard is being more experimental with his voice. the lower-pitched start to 10,000 days is possibly my favourite part of the album (although i remember you saying that the calibre of the vocals wasn't to your liking). i should really have a read of the lyrics, but they aren't really that important to me when the album is so pleasing to my ears.

Music - what do you feel about the comments that have been on ToolNavy about how Tool are recycling their previous material and comments on here that it seems as if it is "Tool playing Tool" type album...

Voice - yes, although I think his voice was used better on Lateralus

The album is extremely well recorded. All of the pieces are musically accomplished.

I dont like the riffs as much as the ones before.

Don't you feel that something like the mouthbox (cant remember what its called) solo on Jambi is extremely dated? And the synth sounds on Intesion (or Right in Two, can't remember which) sound almost exactly like the synth sounds on Laterlus?

Lets be honest, it was never going to live up to expectations. For them to take 5 years to make 10,000 days is a bit of a joke, and to follow an album such as Lat is almost impossible. I'm not saying that I dislike 10,000 days because I think it's good, but I also think it was a bit doomed before it began.

Mega-popular prog-metal outfit Tool have seen their latest album, 10,000 Days, storm its way to the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the US.

US sales of the album (pictured) - Tool's follow-up to 2001's Lateralus - are double that of the album at number two in the chart, Pearl Jam's self-titled debut for J Records.

10,000 Days has already shifted over 500,000 copies in the US alone. Its predecessor, meanwhile, has sold 2.3 million copies, to date.

Pearl Jam's self-titled effort, their eighth studio album in all, has sold more than 250,000 copies in the US so far, suggesting that (as previously reported here) rock music is well and truly outselling traditional pop material globally, not just in the UK.

Wow.

And on CBS' point about rehashing melodies etc, I agree wholeheartedly. There's one bit in one of the songs I was listening to as I was walking around town, and I thought to myself "I swear this bit is in Lateralus". I've yet to figure out the exact link, but it sounds almost identical. I haven't found myself listening to the album much recently. I've got much better albums to be spending my time on in all honesty.

I have been discussing this with my very sage and lovely friend and we have come to the concensus that either Maynard (and the rest of the band) no longer care about what they are doing (given the strange change in their music)

or

Maynard has been over-worked with APC and disconnected from Tool for too long.

Evidence for the first theory is that Maynard released Emotive and Amotion in order to fulfil APC's contractual obligations, despite the fact that they were both of dubious quality. A covers album is barely an album.

Theory #2 is based on the idea that Maynard has been touring with APC, possibly for too long...

CHrist this album is amazing.

Have had a couple of tool albums on my pc for thet last couple of years, recommended by one of my housemates, but bever lstened to them. He told me the other day about the new album being absolutely out of this word, and well... he was right. Stunning............

I'm not really feeling this album...

It's a shame, I really can't get into it, as much as I want to. In fact I'll have another go now, but I don't hold out a huge amount of hope. I think I see it much the same way as CBS, although the lack of spiritual whatnots doesn't bother me, it's more a lack of...

oomph.

After listening to this album over and over I've decided I definitely do think it's brilliant. OK so it's not as 'deep' as Lateralus but it doesn't make it any worse. Lateralus is obviously going to appeal to prog fans more and still rates as one of my all time favourite albums but I believe 10,000 days is just as good. It's probably Tool's most commercial album to date but it's also the easiest to get into (for me anyway) and is probably their catchiest album yet. I also think that it has the best drums and bass of any Tool album yet (guitar is good but the riffs are generally quite simple compared to their earlier material.) Now I can't wait to see them at Download!!

People have been saying it's their most commercial album to date, well I think it's more than that.

I'd say it was an introduction to Tool, whether as a strategy of getting more people to listen to their music or just a way to make more money by drawing in new listeners. Depending on how cynical you are could be either way. ;)

Love this thread!!!

i posted that tool were lazy in an APC thread months ago and got flamed into the ground, i remember it but thats where it ended for me ;). now most people agree, i am almost militant, lol @ me.

Friday night beer and a check out of how this thread goes on = *heaven.
* = or whatever floats your boat.

First person to tackle MJK onto the floor on the UK tour and whisper in his ear "you guys do cover songs" will earn a perfectly good T-bag of your choice.
