If he has a TV with a means of recieving channels in any way, be it from an aerial, freeview box or sky etc, then he will have to pay for a license. Doesnt matter if he doesnt watch it, if its connected you have to pay. Remove means of receiving the channels (bin the aerial) though and you dont
Sorry how?
I have a TV connected up to receive channels and im watching BBC1, the TV licence man calls to the door, i turn the TV off and answer the door, he comes in and sees my TV is connected up to receive channels, i say "I dont watch it" and he says "Ok then, no licence needed"![]()

You can quite legally have stuff like sky boxes connected to receive radio channels, if you search the tv license website hard enough you will find the info.

Yes but my point was for tv channels, not radio though.

This is not true. You only need a license if you are watching programs as they are being broadcast. You do not need a license for simply owning a TV and having it plugged in. If you then switch it on and watch something live then you do.
Thats what im saying though, if it is connected to receive TV channels then you need a license, if you just use it with a dvd player or xbox or whatever you dont.
Sky+, games consoles and digital TV recorders
If you use Sky+, Playstation or any other games console or a digital TV recorder to watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. This is also the case if you use a DVD/VHS recorder.
If you only use your digital box to produce sounds (i.e. you don't use it to display programmes), then you don't need a TV Licence.
If he's watching live on iPlayer, he needs a license. If not, he doesn't.
Problem is however that people have been routinely prosecuted under those exact circumstances.

Really? As TVLicensing won't disclose the Prosecution figures, how can you say there are 'Routine Prosecutions'? Or indeed ANY Prosecutions at all?
