Tabletop Warhammer?

Hello, I'm looking for a new hobby. I use to paint these when I was a kid. Never really got into playing it. Questions:

1. Is it complex to understand the rules?
2. How long do games usually last?
3. How is the community like ?

1) a little
2) it depends, couple of hours maybe?
3) lolololoololololol. depends on your local game store/who you play with.

send them a message. They normally get back to you in decent time

Yeah, I haven’t bothered because I assume it’s the same as everyone else in that the demand is just massive and they can’t keep up with it.
The GSW ones on hobbyworkshop have now moved to end of July eta.

I bought a few Billy’s from ikea. So instead of my pile of shame hiden in the wardrobe it’s now proudly on display instead of fully painted models.

Just built the DOK underworlds warband I had and will hopefully get them primed later. Such amazing models. Hope I can do them justice!

I got one of those fancy air dusters for.... well I thought it was cool. Actually is handy though for when I leave models out and then go back to paint them, little blast along with a brush and won't be painting fibres in.

I have resumed building my Death Guard Combat Patrol, in the hope of trying a few games with my neighbour. I spent a bit too long adding extra little patches of damage and corrosion to the Rhino and started building the final six Marines.

I swear they have shrunk since I put together the bigger guys. So many parts and so many mould lines. Still haven't decided on basing but I did grab some cork mats and sheets, as well as picking up some Vallejo mud terrain paste.l a while ago.

PC games distracted me for way too long again :D.

1. Not really, I’ve played in tournaments with kids who manage just fine.
2. 3h max for a tournament game with 2000pts. Casual can range greatly, some of mine and my friends take 5+
3. No point commenting because it would just be a complete generalisation, it’s like any hobby/fanbase, full of normal people who play, toxic weirdos, and sweats who put their whole personality behind their faction choice.

On another note, a lot of people just enjoy the painting aspect etc, so if you want it primarily from a creative outlet, just go with whatever you think is coolest

Spent this afternoon farting about with airbrush masking putty and I come to the conclusion that Taymia masking tape does the trick 100 times easier and quicker!!!

Also need to pick up an airbrush clamp. Almost knocked my brush and cup off the table multiple times!!! Now that Ive started to use lacquer based paints and thinners I don’t fancy trying to clear that up off the floor compared to water based paints!!

Ugh been having a mare trying to paint the DOK skin. Very small and not very well defined. Every technique under the sun.

Got up this morning to give it another go. Think I've settled on base by brush then small highlights with the airbrush then a heavy diluted wash with strong skin shade. I to add some small highlights by brush but am scared now as it looks ok!!

TLDR, need pics.

Did some trim on my Murderwing yesterday, It is really hard because the AK Shine Enhancer is too slick for the metallic I'm using (VMC exhaust), I don't recall it being as bad when I used gloss varnish instead, before I had the shine enhancer.

I could also probably not dilute the wash as much just spent two much time painting such a small area lol

Female skin is well hard. Just need to knock the shine back a bit. Super happy at the red scales. Just need to edge highlight.

Updated using a different img hosting website.

Also not a suprise to anyone. I’ve also bought more paints from Ionic  At this rate I might have to sell a few bits and bobs.

I like the way they are thicker like AP fanatic and don’t just melt on the wet pallet into a separated pool of water like Vallejo, TTC and worse offender is Pro Acryl. Maybe should nip out to the shed see if I can find an old tile to use as a pallet as a glass one is recommended for pro acryl.

Also the Billy’s so far.

Don’t post that on Reddit. You’ll get a thousand people making assumptions about your mental state, financial state, and how pictures of boxes are harmful to the hobby lol.

All true!!

I do have plan tho. Need another billy and some more glass shelf’s then glass doors.

Then that way I can build some of those boxes and zenithal prime them so they look decent on display until I can decide what paint schemes or bases schemes or when I jump from project to project lol.

Think I figured out was was off putting me on the BT’s. It was bases. I should have started off with a realy dark brown/ black bases before I went nuts with pigments!! Also the talberbs. Hopefully have another crack at it soon.

Going to build the Stormcast blacktalon later :)

The snake woman is looking great. Especially on the outer body with the red gradient.

Having a wee issue with my nightlords in that the recipe I’m following is making it hard to paint the VMC metallic, it’s too slick. I used gloss varnish for test model before I got the shine enhancer (still don’t know difference) and don’t recall having the problem then.
I could try switching to a similar brass colour I guess, it will be heavily enamelled.
But there is no way I’m starting my Helldrake if I’m gonna have this problem across all the trim

I tested one of the AK playmakers (water based paint and not speed paint) yesterday and pleasantly surprised. The playmakers have a brush head instead of a nib. My idea was to black out the parts that’s were to get metallics after base coating and varnish. Might give you the grip you need.

I even think they do metallics in the play markers so could be a way to knock out a lot of trim in a quick easy way.

I used it to black out some trim and paint the eye socket black.

Oh yeah I do have those AK metallic markers. They would be fine for the top of the trim for sure, but too thick for the side bits, might be a compromise somewhere for the Heldrake at least.
The old bronze is probably the closest colour but I did get some pens with my inks that you can fill up with whatever and have a mixing ball in. So I could make my own mix perhaps using exhaust manifold and a few drops of something to thicken it. Or just try recreate it with the metallics I have already.

Not that I’m fussed with variation, they all look different as I leave some bits of trim black and the enamels change it all loads too. Could just use the bronze and call it a day, well reminded!
