Tailgated at the 40 speed limit

I hate it too. I try my best to drive carefully and of course nobody is perfect. But there really is no need to tailgate and be so aggressive when I'm going along at the speed limit.

I may try the "rest foot on brake pedal" trick in future. In any case, I certainly won't be bullied into speeding.

I soooo wish I had a rear facing cam.

Is there actually anything illegal/problematic with sticking a rear facing video camera in a car?

I had no idea about this inaccurate speedo thing. I thought they had to be spot-on accurate by law and this was one of the things checked in an MOT?

Absolutely not, they are generally pretty far off, especially as you get going a bit faster

It doesnt even have to be operational for an MOT I dont think

I'll normally tap my brakes with my left foot but carry on driving at same speed, just to get brake lights on. If they get really close, I will do the stupid thing of slowing down even further, and then flooring it, just to make a point, childish I know :D

Saying that, people that drive dead on the speed limit generally pee me off a bit anyway... not them for driving slowly, but because most 40mph roads should really be 50 or 60....

You should do what my friend did which was attempt left foot braking to show the brake lights instead he did an emergency stop and had a 5 series into the back of a Corsa.

The woman was not happy and called the police, when they turned up he pointed out where the cat had ran across the road in front of him :D

If it's a single carridgeway and someone does this, I slow down... gradually until I'm doing 20mph.

I do this.... I drive a £100 saxo so couldnt care less if its rear ended.

Although one bloke overtook me and started weaving in front of me hitting the brakes. I was close to following him home and hitting him with my keyboard.

There are a worrying number of people who will tailgate without realising it, and generally a tap on the brakes or a squirt of the washer jets will give them a nudge.

I have to confess on a few occasions, I've got fed up and slammed on the brakes - if they go into the back of me, its their fault, no doubt about it...

However, today, a berk in an older 3 series shot right up behind me as I was in the outside lane of the M25 passing traffic in the middle lane. I've never seen anyone get so close to my back bumper, cant have been more than a few inches.... I got to a gap that was too small to be worth pulling over in, and I wont make a special effort to get out the way for arrogant t*ssers, but he undertook me and nearly sideswiped me as he pulled back into the outside lane and got "stuck" behind the car infront doing the same speed I was. I could easily have put my foot down to stop him getting infront of me (Mondeo TDCi > 316i in terms of motorway accelleration) but he WOULD have gone into the side of me or the back of the car in the middle lane...

Shocking how some people can drive like that an not kill themselves

Is there actually anything illegal/problematic with sticking a rear facing video camera in a car?

nope

some companies install them in their entire fleet of vehicles, so in the event of an accident they've got video evidence to proove who was at fault.

I just drive 2/3 mph over the speed limit usually

32 in a 30

43 in a 40

54 in a 50

65 on a 60

80/85 on the motorway, i always tell myself to slow down but then i see a car go past at like 110 and I think to myself, damn I'll put my foot down a bit :D

It really annoys me when people tailgate but if someone is doing 20 in a 30 or 25 in a 40 i will be honest and say I tailgate them. Can't stand slow drivers :(

If they are driving at the speed limit i give them lots of space :)

Whats the point? Internet fame for morons?

I would probably take the evidence, put into onto a DVD, and then post it anonymously to the local police station, and say please have a word with this person about their driving. ;)

Generally I'm very polite to other people, and try to be tolerant. I don't want to go into detail about this case, but it was extremely aggressive for absolutely no reason, and as I get older I start to feel maybe I should be taking more of a stand ... although I have yet to start ...

Should have pulled over then pulled him from his car by his hair and stabben in the eyes with some Monster Munch, s'wat i'd av dun....honest.

Hate tailgaters. What's the hurry? When people get into a car they turn into monsters, it's not like you'd walk right up behind someone walking slow on the street in front of you and breathe down their neck.

I drive on the speed limit and not over, I don't make the rules up like some people seem to have justified to themselves. If they don't mind putting themselves and others at risk by speeding and tailgating they need a reality check imo.

It's really not worth risking your or someone elses life by being an idiot, and even if you think you're in control someone else might not be anticipating your speedy arrival and pull out of a junction etc. All to get to get to your destination a few minutes faster? Why not just leave earlier, honestly.

I drive a safe, though small, car, and don't fancy much getting caught speeding and points on my license when darn insurance is so expensive already.

I would also urge anyone who has resorted to brake testing the tailgater to deal with it in a more sensible way, as this is just being brought down to their level.

I think the most sensible way to deal with it on an A-Road is to slow down at a safe overtaking spot, putting on your left indicator, when the opportunity arises, and let them pass. This is most likely what I will try if it happens again.
