Tailgated at the 40 speed limit

Recently my wife was learning to drive, with the help of my old instructor and myself. I can't tell you the number of times we got tailgated in 30 zones, 20 zones next to schools, 40 zones etc. She would drive to the speed indicated for the road and still get bullied but never gave up and went faster than the limit.

Now that she's past (with 0 minors!) she still drives in the same manor as before, always observes the limits, does 60 and 70 where applicable and still gets muppets tailgating.

It does my head in! We were both tought to keep a safe distance to the car in front of you and if someone is tailgating then you need to increase the space between you and the car in front so that if you have to break you can do so and avoid the t*sser in the car installing his engine in your boot. Shame then that sometimes i've actually been driving at 20 mph in a 30 zone to keep a safe distance in front of me to stop because someone behind me doesn't understand how to drive.

I agree, definitely don't do anything to antagonise them further, probably won't end up well.

What is the 'official' thing to do should someone do this to you, that is, what would the police tell you to do if the situation did arise?

I would also urge anyone who has resorted to brake testing the tailgater to deal with it in a more sensible way, as this is just being brought down to their level.

I think the most sensible way to deal with it on an A-Road is to slow down at a safe overtaking spot, putting on your left indicator, when the opportunity arises, and let them pass. This is most likely what I will try if it happens again.

lol are you having a laugh!?

There's no way I'd do that.

If they are tailgating me when I'm doing 30 in a 30 or 40 in a 40 I'll go out of my way to p*** them off as much as i can.

Childish i guess but they started it :D

Why sink to their level, you're no better then. In fact, what you do may well also be dangerous.

new option :D

1.Put your foot down and lose them by 15-20 yards

2.Break

3. Put the car in reverse (rear lights)

4.They **** themselves and break harshly

5.You pull off

If you do this you will most probably die :D

No absolutely not. I am proud of myself that I have the self control necessary not to be forced into something that could be dangerous on the public highway. Believe me, it takes me some self control, I won't tell you the thoughts that are actually going through my head!!

Some people here are recounting stories where brake testing has resulted in a collision, and I just think this is just reckless and making the roads more dangerous.

Meh i drive a 1.25 1998 fiesta LX

The thought of a collision never really goes through my head

If i had a mini cooper s though......

It'd be a completely different story :)

Accidents happen matey, despite what car you're in you can still get injured or hurt someone else, it's really not worth it. I hope for your sake you don't actually drive like a fool and you're just trying to be funny on the internetz.

You must have misunderstood me

My point was if i had a mini cooper s (my dream car) i wouldn't do anything dangerous.

I do love to pull off at speed though, I must look like a retard in my fiesta but its fun and no law to stop me from doing so as long as i apply the breaks at 30.

But as i said earlier, if someone is tailgating me when I'm driving my fiesta and doing the speed limit I'll just slow down, not like I'm applying the breaks harshly, just annoying them.

Not going to lie :)

I didn't misunderstand (I think), your statement above implies you're OK with driving dangerously as long as it's a cheap car.

Kudos on the honesty, but avoid antagonising people, you never know who is behind the wheel and what they're prepared to do to you if you anger them.

last time i got tailgated, i slowed right down to about 20, then put the car in 1st, and waited for him to pull out to overtake. At which point i promptly put my foot down and left him for dead.

He didnt try again.

I don't think slowly down is dangerous if done very gradually.

On the other hand applying the breaks harshly is a completely different story, and something I'd never do.

I'll admit do doing exactly that :D They were driving a ford Ka though, a crime in itself

Hopefully I'll grow out of it soon :p

I'm sure he didn't in case you stopped him from overtaking again!

I despair at the driving I see when i'm out and about, I love driving but a lot of the other road users just make it hell sometimes. People who speed and *** about get on my nerves, as well as people who don't signal.

There is a mix of country lanes, where people tailgate and speed, and town driving, where people fail to look before pulling out and dont signal, around here. I also think there is a significant chav population in essex, i'm sure other people may have noticed!

+1. I always assume they are extremely dangerous and never make eye contact with them, and I won't ever stop the car completely. Even though my brain is sending me messages to destroy them, I am able to override this and look to avoid trouble whenever possible. This technique has served me well in life.
