I was in Barcelona a few years back and had no issues. Like anywhere take the usual precautions and strap the camera across you so can't be taken without you noticing.

The bags you take are very important for protecting your gear while on holiday.
I still use a bump bag type which is quite big to store my gear in. Plus it has a shoulder strap as well which helps for load carrying and security.
The best bag for security is a draw string, though it is a pain to get any thing out quickly !

Best bag for security is a local super market carrier bag nobody think there will be snugging valuable in it! Everyone in Rio carries one rather than any other bag!

I have never been to Rio and if I did I doubt I would take much out with me !

5d mkii in a carrier bag in touristy spots was fine during the day it felt pretty safe at night though I carried nothing if any value!
