Taking on additional work for financial gain

From what you've said mate it seems like a no brainer, go for it!

If I can persuade the managing director to go for it both me and my mate have already agreed to it. The MD is mainly worried about deliverables but we are running out of options with regards to who we could get to do it anyway.

Its kinda messed up as I would be managing the project and deliverables for which ever subcontractor it went to so would be easy for the company if it was me who was doing the work but just being paid at cost rates and not what gets filtered down to me as staff.

But the more I think about it the more I think I'm turning in to a workaholic which scares me slightly but I enjoy my job :)
There's no question about it, that's a great thing to be able to say with any degree of sincerity. Thinking about it, if I were in your position, I would probably say yes and take on the extra work. I could always do with a little more money, and for the sake of two weeks work, I think it's a reasonable exchange of time for cash.

I did this at one stage, was working at place A, then took on place B which made my working hours ~50+ (in addition to uni). Money was obviously enjoyable, was just physically tiresome. Ending up leaving place A and continued at place B, still there now.

if it's part of a learning curve, yes. if it's a situation like my friend is in, got a child and overstretched himself on a mortgage he can't really afford so takes all hours he can to survive, yes. if i didn't need the money and valued my 'me' time more, then no.

Right,

Just a question to everyone.

"Would you take on additional work if it meant some financial gain?"

Just trying to gauge a situation I'm in.

Unless you're volunteering then any additional work I'd chose to take on is by default for 'financial gain'

Your question isn't so much 'would' as 'do' as most people are in the position to do so.

My answer is no, I don't take on additional work for financial gain - I earn enough and value my free time.

I'd need more information before I could make a reasonable decision, it would depend on a number of factors (in vague order of importance) - is it something I wanted to do? What is the cost/benefit ratio for me? What sort of time would it take up?

//edit ah I see now you've give more details - based on that I'd probably do it as it's for a set period and sounds like it would be a decent return. I might be tempted to spend some of the proceeds on something of a treat for myself when done though to remind myself what I'm doing this for.

Dancing girls :) :p

I'm young and this could lead to a lot of extra money. It's also something which I've not designed before so will be interesting to do :)

Do it, gain the experience, tick another box - will look good on your CV and it seems like you will genuinely learn something new :). At the end of the day it's 'only' 2 weeks, it's not like it's a 2/4/6 month project.

You like your job and the work so it's not like it's some horrible, boring piece of work that you'll really hate (he says).

What's the likely hood of you guys getting stuck or bogged down on something? It's not like O&G projects never have their hiccups ;)

Just remember a one off like this is ok, it's when you start doing it all the time you have to worry. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy :p

So you're asking if you should work hard for a couple of weeks for around (I'm estimating) £7-10k?

No brainer TBH if it's something you enjoy... :p

As I've said if we get offered the work were taking it, just wanted to see if I was the only one that would or if others in a similiar position just say no so they could spend a few extra hours a night sitting infront of the TV.

When I was young I took every bit of extra work going, paid or not, if it meant I got extra experience. It's paid dividends in the long run.

I used to do a few nights a week in a pub to help make up a better wage.

I stopped doing it as I struggled when the pub would shut at 1ish, up again have half 6 for normal work.

I would consider a 2nd job that was only a couple of hours a night after work, only if it paid well.

I also would consider doing whatever to get 2 month salary in 2 weeks!
