I have always looked on it as a bit tacky but off to Sat Bains on Saturday night and would like to take some pics as a lot of his stuff is quite special
On the one hand, I'm of the view it's a bit tacky. However, you're paying for an experience and you really ought to be able to act as you wish. If you feel comfortable taking them, then I'd say go for it but please, for the love of all things holy, keep the flash off!
bit chavvy, not so bad if there's a novelty value to the pic. But if its purely a pic of the food, it screams nothing but pauper in a flash restaurant.
Alternatively, pics of friends having a meal isn't so bad as long as the primary purpose is to catch the moment of friends/family enjoying themselves.
We took a few discrete pictures when we ate at L'Enclume last December. Compact camera and flash off, not some huge DSLR setup or something equally silly.
We're not skint but that was an expensive meal in our book so took the chance to show some of the presentation to friends. It was amazing though.
SWMBO takes a lot of pictures of food, whether it be at home, in nandos or at a Gordon Ramsay type establishment.
It used to be a little bit cringe-y but after a while you get used to it, I generally just don't take pics so it's quite nice to have them It's also quite nice to go back over the experience, and we're not loaded so going out for posh nosh is a treat - it's nice to remember it.
I've never been bothered, but I'm using my camera less and less.
There was someone with a HUGE lens in St John the other week, it just looked ridiculous. The problem is, you need a decent camera to take decent pics of most restaurant food due to the lighting. A high-end compact will do for most places, but most phone cameras end up making the food look terrible. Sat Bains is fairly relaxed though so I don't think you'll feel too awkward getting it out, and I bet you any money you won't be the only ones taking pics
I've evern seen people take restaurant pictures with flash - that is definitely a step too far. Someone told me about on their trip to Arzak there was someone with a high end SLR with what they described as a huge flash gun. They took the first picture, everyone looked around and they put it away and it never appeared again.
I'm going to be getting a new camera which will be fairly discrete for restaurants whilst being capable of taking good pics in low light which I'll be using for my forthcoming US trip (NYC & Chicago).
Haha I follow NPH and saw that meal come through the other day. Looks tasty.
I do it all the time when I'm out. I asked before if they minded and they were very much, it's your meal do as you please sir.
In a way, I think it's a compliment, as it is like art really for a lot of them and they're proud of what they serve out. So why can't people capture that. As long as it's not too in everyone else's face.
A mate of mine takes pictures of his food every time he goes out, to be honest it annoys me quite a bit.
Don't get me wrong, I'd take a picture if I thought it warranted it (especially if I'd made it) but this guy doesn't use his phone, it's a full-on camera bag he takes with him with his Canon 7D and lenses!
I don't tend to do it, find it a bit odd, but some people like doing it. I seem to remember someone on here getting a right roasting for doing it a few years ago
Taking a picture of the company is as far as I like it and then only for a really special occasion. I just don’t see the point. I want to look at it, enjoy it, eat and then savour the moment. There is nothing more boring than looking at pictures of plates of food the day after that is if you ever see them again.
The picture taking in restaurants is as bad as all the people taking pictures/videos at concerts, it's for plebs. Just don’t sit next to me when you do it.
Not too bad, last time i did it was in Luanda, no-one spoke english so i ended up with the two largest fillet steaks on the stone + plate of chips ever, i only took a picture cause i was shocked at the size, second shock came at the stupid price, the picture really doesn't do the size of the meat justice, was only for lunch too:
