I don't think it's pathetic or chavvy, it's nice to remember a good experience. However I agree that as long as it's done discreetly i.e. no flash is best.
I think it's worse that you don't capture any memories of good times together. We have the technology these days - why waste it?I like to see a timeline of my life in pictures. The occasional cringe photo is worth it in the long run.

If you're talking about the staff then I agree, since waiting staff looking down on people is funny since they're basically servants. However I look down on people that take photos at posh restaurants if I'm a customer, sorry.
