Taking the Pee in Paris!

The history of the French (and European) pissoir is long, nothing new here at all save people will nowadays probably misuse it!

These dirty habits are yet another reason for us to leave the EU of course ;)

And from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pissoir
In the spring of 1830 the city government of Paris decided to install the first public urinals on the major boulevards. These structures served both as urinals and supports for posters and advertising. They were put in place by the summer, but in July they were put to a completely different purpose; providing materials for street barricades during the French Revolution of 1830.[2]

They were re-introduced in different form in Paris in 1841 by Claude-Philibert Barthelot, comte de Rambuteau, the Préfet of the former Départment of the Seine. Initially having a simple cylindrical shape, they were also called colonnes Rambuteau. In 1877 they were replaced by multi-compartmented structures called vespasiennes,[3] in reference to the 1st-century Roman emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus, who placed a tax on urine collected from public toilets for use in tanning. At the peak of their spread in the 1930s there were 1,230 pissoirs in Paris, but by 1966 their number had decreased to 329. By 2006 only one remained, on Boulevard Arago.[4][self-published source] (From 1981 they had been replaced systematically with new technology, the Sanisette.)[5]

In Berlin the first pissoirs were erected in 1863. In order to distinguish them from those of other cities, several architectural design competitions were organised in 1847, 1865 and 1877. One of the most successful types was an octagonal structure with seven stalls, first built in 1879. Their number increased to 142 by 1920.[6]

Temporary pissoirs with multiple unscreened urinals around a central column have been introduced in the UK.[7][8] A temporary pissoir for women called the Peeasy is used in Switzerland.[9]

That's wonderful. I have been known many many times to **** up against a shop or whatever is available (preferably some sort of religious shop) when I'm out, so a few more easily accessible public toilets would be wonderful. I'm not sure about using that type in the middle of the day, but the ones that they have in Amsterdam, which have a sort of booth around them, are great for day time urination.

Grim.

As another poster mentioned Amsterdam has a vaguely similar setup but at least there is a metal barrier around you (albeit perforated with multiple holes of the non glory kind).

The ones in Amsterdam also disappear in to the ground when demand is low, and have a complete cleaning system in the ground to ensure they smell minty fresh when you go break the seal.

Now that I didnt know!

However with the minty fresh . It must have been broken the last time I went because it smelt like the corner of an Asda carpark.

I was gobsmacked when I saw this! Is it really better than some guy hiding around a corner to take a pee?

Imagine these sprouting up in the UK. I think it looks disgusting. I could never stand in the street and urinate into a small 'letterbox.

I wonder if Boris will make a comment? Lol
No need to imagine, similar ones are in central London, though grey and usually multi user.

There simply aren't enough public toilets for other users though, so unless you can stand up, you're still screwed.

Cleary there is a need for these things but i just dont understand how any adult can get to the point of either peeing themselves or needing to use a shop doorway what is wrong with you.

Just use the toilet before you leave the pub/club surely that buys you enough time to get home or get to the next venue.

There used to be something similar in my town on a weekend that looked like this:

Horrible things. Thankfully the night life of clubbers disappeared from here as the clubs closed and it turned into more of a wine bar & wetherspoons type town and so they did away with them.

A lot of it comes down to laziness.

I've been out many times in the day, and if you're out for several hours will sometimes need the loo. But we just find the nearest McDonalds/BK etc and use their facilities. Wouldn't ever dream of nipping down an alleyway to relieve myself.

They used to have those in my town too at busy times of the year, they weren't great but they did at least have a modicum of privacy once you were stood there, the ones in OP's link look more like you're just whipping it out and weeing in a bin!!

This isn't true - there's a couple in the city that are underground in the daytime and come out at night (also female ones) but the vast majority are there permanently and smell awful. However it is a good solution and does reduce public urination, especially when many bars and restaurants charge to use the toilet (McDonalds included).

Must be a man thing then as we dont see women crouching by the side of the road. They seem able to hold it in.
Or they're just forced to buy something for the sake of being able to use the toilets. Whilst there are some establishments that allow the public in just to use the toilets, some areas don't have them, meaning you're forced to spend a few quid on something in a coffee shop.

Definitely room for improvement in public bog facilities.

We have them in the UK already - albeit not the eco friendly versions... I've used the one near Liverpool Street plenty of times

lol! I was arrested for doing exactly that one night (in my defence, the shop was old and long closed and it was in a dark alley, but plod were obviously watching me in my drunken state) so pop up urinals are fine in my book. I've used them in broad daylight with no issues :)
