Talks continue to save Woolworths

I remember buying those £3 boxes and cramming as many sweets in as possible so they were almost bursting apart at the checkout. :p

Though now I use, www.aquarterof.co.uk

I always used to to this, I remember one time the bottom actually ripped while at the checkout. Luckily the woman just shoved it all in a bag for me :p.

On topic, I'm sad to see it go. The Woolworths in my local town (Uxbridge) is pretty big and you can walk through it as a short-cut to the bus station :(.

The Woolies in our town is always full of chavs. The store is a mess, out of date and filthy. Glad to see it go. Apparently an Iceland is replacing it though.....greeeeeeeeeat! :(

i think a BHS is going to move into where our 3 storey woolworths was. im glad to see it go. the shop was a complete mess, from top to bottom. i dont even think they had any official managers. which seemed odd. no wonder it was a state.

Businesses come businesses go. 29k jobs are 29k people who no longer work for that company, not being paid, going onto the dole most probably. Thats a downer.

On the plus side, all the sales that Woolworths *used* to take (not enough, but still) will go somewhere else, wherein those companies get bigger, take on more staff etc...

Ive been told this is not the case.

some of the woolies have apparently been taken over (inc staff) by unknown company(s).

no idea on the truth of it but we shall see. it certainly makes sense.

our local one is going because the lease also runs out on the 31st december. so i can fully understand nobody is going to renew the lease.

anyway afaik it closes on the 27th after a massive sale of the junk they have left. then the staff will come in for a few days later to clear up.

29k Jobs is a lot of people unemployed but i can't say as i would even care that woolies is going. I can honestly say the last time i forked over money in a woolies was for a breakfast whilst waiting for an exam, and even that was only because BHS Cafe was closed

most other stores rebrand/diversify but woolworths has been the same for years and is a really dated brand. easy to see why it has gone down the pan.

feel for the 29k people losing their jobs though.

The shop was crud and vastly overpriced.

I'm glad its gone. I do feel sorry for the people losing their jobs. I also feel sorry for the country too as thats gunna be a rough 25k people claiming benefits for the next god knows how many years.

Look on the bright side :D

Even with these closing down "discounts" Woolworths is still more expensive than what you can find them in Tesco for, especially box set dvd's!

Prime example, Heroes box set:

Woolworths £34.99 + 10% discount
Tesco £24.96

Went in yesterday on the off chance tv box sets might be reduced and found things where atleast £5 more expensive even after the 20% cut on everything. I saw 1 thing that might have been cheaper and that was the GH:WT which had £35 off.

Woolworths dont specialise in anything and everything you can buy from them you can buy cheaper probably next door like you can in Swindon.

I never feel the need to go into Woolies anymore because I know I can get stuff cheaper for a 5sec walk.

lol :p

It is amazing though how many people still go charging about woolies thinking they will get a bargin.

I took a glance at the one in Milton Keynes, its pretty much empty the shelves are pretty much bare.

I have a mate who works for woolies.

I told him how crap the deals were on games, basically he said just go in and make offers. He could sell me any game for 50% off.

The administrators are making them work later just to get rid of stock.

Just go in and ask what the best price they could do something for.
