TalkTalk don't talk!

You just need to go through their questions and I find it easier to call people.

A relative has SKY broadband and was getting asked all kinds of strange questions. I popped round called SKY, after 15 minutes they were happy enough and went away to fix the fault. The trick is to work with them , be calm but don't be afraid to help them jump steps in their scripts to hurry them along. There is only so many places the fault can be in standard home internet, your PC, your router and your internal cabling. After that it is down to your provider to sort out.

A few hours ago I tried Youtube again...and it was back to normal 1080p streaming. So I did a speed test - 9.8Mps down, 1.3Mbps up, ping 47ms. Tried another one just now and got 2.3Mbps up, which is much faster than I've ever had before. I was getting ~12 down and ~1 up before.

So somebody fixed something somewhere.

I shall wait and see what happens over the next few days.

It's highly likely changing ISPs won't make any difference, the line is broken, those stats don't look very good - none of which is really related to TT.

This triggered my curiosity because from what I've read the stats were adequate for the intended speeds. So now that my speeds are back to close to what they were before, I checked the stats again.

Attenuation: 10.0 up, 26.4 down
SNR margin: 8.0 up, 7.7 down

The stats are no better than before but the ping has gone down from ~350ms to ~45ms and the download speed has gone up from ~0.6Mbps to ~9.8Mbps, which is a huge improvement. The stats might not be very good, but they're good enough for mediocre broadband. From what I've read, 26 attenuation is roughly OK for up to ~16Mbps and an SNR margin of 8 is fine. Strictly speaking, anything >0 will do.

Those stats are fine, but they were fine when you were having problems. I think we can rule the line out as being the issue.

Either it was a TalkTalk issue, or your modem/router is faulty.
