Tank bags - scratching?

Hi,

I'm looking to get a tank bag for Scotland next year, probably just a small one for a drink, wallet, phone, map, so nothing more than 10L

I found the tanklock ones, but that would mean I would never be able to 'quickly' use it (requires a flange thing attached to the filler cap which would be attached the whole time through Scotland of course, but then when I come to use it for something else, it'll be a pain to put the flange back on).

So my question is: what's the scratching risk like with a normal magnetic tank bag? Over a few thousand miles I would have thought there would be some rubbing / scratching?

Thanks.

no idea,i have a baglux one and it doesn't mark my tank, but those magnetic ones are different

you can buy that 3m invisible film,id stick some of that on where it attaches just to be double sure it wont mark the tank/paintwork

I have found they all scratch eventually, normally when it rains. Some people won't care about or even notice the micro abrasions but I can almost guarantee that they will be there if you've used a tank bag.

I will be investing in a tanklock bag soon.

I have Small Oxford tank bag and it just about fits wallet, keys, small water bottle, phone and couple of other bits and bobs.
I haven't scratched my bike with it, tbh I don't really use it much now as I have the top-box.
Best is to make sure there's nowt stuck to the magnets BEFORE you attach it to the tank.

I have the Oxford magnetic ones too and even if there's no dirt at the start of the ride, at the end there can be especially if it's been raining.

Then when you remove the bag the magnets slide a little (no way at all to prevent this) and you end up with micro scratches over time.

Hmmm maybe, but then that stuff gets nasty eventually doesn't it? With dirt slowly creeping under it (that's my experience of it anyway). If the tape is noticeable, I may as well get the tanklock one tbh.

Thinking about it, I don't think I'd actually use it unless I'm riding somewhere over a few days, so maybe I won't risk magnetic. Hmmmm

I have some on my zx6r just behind the pillion seat,no dirt has crept under the edges, looks invisible, minor scratches polish out

best with that is if it gets wrecked with scratches just warm it up and peel it off, stick a new piece on

Yeah it does discolour over time. I use some for my knee tank protectors.

mine hasn't discoloured btw, think I stuck it on last summer

you must have bought the Michael Jackson sort kreeee

I live in a country with sun ;)

You won't see it on a black bike, only on white or vibrant bikes it will show.

Your paint or at least the clear coat has scratches everywhere (away from the 3M film)!

what paint scratches? that's on the film

black also attracts direct sunlight more than white paint

its better to stick some on imo than none, those heavy magnets will scuff the paintwork eventually

Eh?

1 - I said the scratches were off the film (pillion handle for example).

2 - No colour "attracts" more sunlight. Once the clear 3M film starts to tarnish (it's transparent fyi) you will see the tarnish much clearer on a light colour.

3 - Completely agree.

black does though,it absorbs more sunlight than any other colour

white reflects it hence why its not hot to touch

It make no real difference for a transparent layer stuck on top.

As an aside, my bike's roasting to touch on the tank when it's hot here. In fact all metal parts are hot and none of the plastic parts are no matter what the colour on my bike.

checkthe kriega tank option for fitting thier us packs to tanks

Yeah I was considering that as I have a 10L I could put on there, but I like the convenience of the pockets/pouches on a normal tank bag, which the Kriega wouldn't really provide as most of their range are just roll bags.
