Tanker drivers strike rant

They're real heroes, "we drive a bomb around and its a dangerous job" ; "We do unsociable hours start at 5am and can not drink before work" ; "All we want is a fair wage"

Not much sympathy from me. Begs the question if its that bad why are they still in the same job 15 years after the last pay rise. As for the pension, isnt everyone getting ripped off these days why should they be any different.

Ok, but that is YOUR choice to do that. No one forced you into your working conditions. You cose as you thought it was obviously reasonable.

Now you obviously dont think is, so what are you going to do about it? Maon about OTHER peoples jobs?

Just to say, nobody forced these truck drivers.
Think before you speak.

My housemate is a teaching student, and she moans that it's crappy pay.

She doesn't like it when I say that surely teaching is more about the feeling and your own feeling of duty to teach children, and that if your feeling of duty to the children and education is less than what you think it is worth - you shouldn't teach.

As stated before, I think 'Social Worth' and 'Economic Worth' are being confused in this thread.

Why do people keep comparing jobs that are not revenue making to jobs that are?
you cannot compare an NHS doctor or a school teacher to a footballer or a banker etc in terms of value where wage is concerned!

It doesn't change the original argument. Truck driving is easier than medicine and several other jobs. However, due to union power they are trying to force through a wage which frankly they do not deserve. If the job did require that salary they wouldn't have to strike to get it.

If they are *that* indispensable in terms of skill, then they will be snapped up by rival firms offering more. That is capitalism. They should suck it up and work or find a new job. Judging by the interest on this board, i'm sure several people would be willing to fill their places.

the job does require that salary as other companies pay similar to what they are asking iirc.

The OP was about the under valueing of the Public sector. These tank drivers are not in the public sector.
Who cares if its easier or not, its the value of the job to the person who pays the wages and when it comes to private sector, bringing money in is more valuable than nobility.

I havent read all of the post but from what i understand the reason for the strike is for a payrise. Ok from what i see they are currently well paid with the average driver earing something like £38k but i also understand they have not had a payrise for something like 17yrs. Everyone has standards of living and their standard of living has probably dropped over the years as their wages havent increased to compensate for the cost of living. Now im sure they still live a pretty comfortable life but they are still entitled to a payrise like everyone else.

It's just about greed tbh.

They have seen the profits made and want a slice. Union protestations of same pay for 10+ years is due to the fact that several years ago tanker drivers were paid prohibitive amounts of money and there was an adjustment made when more Class 1 licences were being achieved.

In 1993 some tanker drivers were being paid £40k basic (at the time more than most Directors) and some were using Union agreements and strikes to achieve £60K (particularly in one case, for the company I worked for at the time, when a Union official, who never actually drove a vehicle in the five years of his tenure, was on £70K with his "overtime" duties for the Union!!.

Have your "sympathy" for them if you must, but they will have none for you!!.

.

As you can see there are two sides to every story

If they were "bombs" they would never get near the roads of britain with all the health and Safety requirements these days and rollover training for tanker drivers is fairly standard in most large organisations.

Regardless of what time they start, as far as I am aware, no employer whatever your job, wants you to drink before turning up for work.

All they want, is the extra money that "other" companies pay their drivers' (ie) parity, and if we the great British public have to suffer the consequences, I'm fairly sure they don't give a frick!!
