Well my renault clio grande 2001 1.2L,
It makes a really foul noise, i believe they call it a tappet?
What would be making this noise, i heard it could just be the oil need replacing, or just filling up? any help thanks
Sam

It might be best if you take it to a garage and get them to have a look at it.

It could indeed be tappets, or valve clearances. If it's making a noise due to low oil, then it is quite likely shagged.

Money is an issue first car, 18
Insurance is through the roof, but I will try to get it looked at

I'd still get it looked at, and TBH if money is so much of an issue you can't maintain your car (regardless of reason for money issues) then you really shouldn't be driving it as you obviously can't afford to. I used to put money back every month to cover anything like this when I was 18, it's just common sense

Next question, have you ever checked the oil level? or any of the other fluids for that matter?

I kind of answered that in your quote lol.
Im checking the oils levels and such today, havnt had much time as being a full time student. only just finished now looking to get a full time job.

should be checking fluids weekly at least, it's basic car maintenance and can/will save you a fortune in bills in the future. sounds to me like your oil is low/empty in which case if it making a noise because of it its going to be expensive

No time as a full time student?! That's when I had most time!

Does it make the noise constantly or just on startup?

What does being a full time student have to do with taking 2 minutes to check the oil every month?

If you check the oil and coolant levels, and get the oil & oil filter replaced when it should be, there's little else you need to do to keep your car running healthily

Yeah well lots of revisions exam times you know.
and it makes the sound constantly, and changes pitch when i have the clutch down

I'm AWFUL when it comes to checking levels. I actually don't think I've ever checked the level in between services :o.

Okay okay, calm down. I just couldn't be arsed okay, the student thing was just an excuse
but im checking it tooday probably.

Probably?

Hmm, it seems to me your "Can't be arsed" attitude is going to cost you!

FWIW, I've already checked the oil & water on my car today, it took less than a minute.

I have to do a daily check of my truck at work as a legal requirement, so I guess the habit has spread to my cars over the years....

The time / effort involved doing these simple checks (oil water tyres & lights is the best 4 to do) can save money from both breakdowns & accidents not to mention less chance of being pulled by Plod for having say a brake light out.

Overkill you may think, but its money down the drain in one form or another, sooner or later, if you don't.
