Anyone here into target shooting and the like? It's something I've always been interested in, and always wanted to try. I'm just wondering how you get into it, really. Where to go, what to do (or is that obvious? :p), what equipment I'd need etc etc.

It's just one of those things that seem really cool (and I don't mean in a 'omg, a gun!' kind of way) to me, along with airsoft. Unfortunately, there are no airsoft sites anywhere near me, and I can't justify buying anything more powerful than a springer for back garden use (but that's another story, really).

I'm in the Edinburgh area as well, if that helps. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

:D sry :(

depends what kind of target shooting you want to shoot air rifles? then im your man but if your into real bullets such as rimfire which you need to obtain a licence for them im not, email me at will_clark @ supernova-uk . com

You will need to find a full bore rifle club near you; I don't know where to look for Scotland, maybe this will help.

If you google for "West of Edinburgh shooting club" you may find that useful too.

Air rifles would be cool with me...you don't need a license for certain models, do you? That would be handy, I don't particularly fancy going through the hassle of acquiring a license.

singist, thanks for the link, it lists an Edinburgh shooting club. Website looks a little basic, but the webmaster has an email address for enquiries. ;)

Feek is the main man to talk to on this. But anyway, I bought a Webley Exocet 2 summer's ago, and I love it. That summer I bought it I took it to a disused quarry (smart I know)with some paper targets, tin cans, bottles etc and just blasted away. Last summer after all that shanagans with the wee boy getting killed I didnt take it there for fear of being lynched (although nobody ever went there, you never know). But now my mate (his parents :p) have bought a house with a HOOGE garden that he says we can used for shooting in, great. So if you get a good place to shoot, or preferable a club (none near me :() then its great fun.

If you are at university or are planning on going to one, then you might want to find out if they have a range on campus or access to one outside. Personally i shoot for my university and i love it.

As has been said, try and find out if there is a local range near you and talk to the chairman/owner etc. If you want to do air rifle shooting or small bore, most indoor ranges will be able to do that. If you want to shoot full bore then its an outdoor range at somewhere like bisley. All kinds of target shooting can be really good fun and very rewarding. I could prob help you further if you have any questions, just drop me an email on my trust account or add me in msn.

We're short of anywhere to shoot them really though so I don't get to play much. I cannae hit jack **** half the time :D (probably doesn't help that it weighs half a ton with all that crap bolted to it!)

It is actually something I'd really like to get better at, I'm thinking about joining a club. I only bought the sight and silencer for giggles, I just think it looks rad :D

lol if your going to join a club youl need a better pistol really sorry to be so blunt but it is a nice pistol and good for plinking

Yeah, it's a pretty short barrel, me and a few mates bought them just for plinking, we just shoot cans and targets and stuff. I only have it as a toy, hence all the stick on tat :D. I hardly need a red dot sight for shooting the length of my garden! I would be curious about taking it up at a hobby level one day though.

@ OP: Probably best if you got o the club and see if you can try it out before spending a few hundred quid on a decent rifle (sometimes a lot more)

@ Mohinder: Thats just a springer P99 isnt it? Edit: just seen your next post, Gas gun then (blowback?) How much was it?

I'm looking for a cheap gas NBB (non blowback) pistol and found this http://www.gizmos-uk.com/Baby Desert Eagle.html specs looks pretty good and the only review I could find gave it 8/10.

mohinder's gun is a co2 pistol and not a springer it works on compressed co2, a springer works on a piston being pushed by a highly tensioned spring

Depends what sort of shooting you want to do. If you want to do precision target shooting (which I find deadly boring) then you need a quite expensive gun. If you're doing something a lot more fun such as practical pistol then you can do that with CO2 or airsoft. Airsoft is more realistic in that the guns have moving slides and load in the 'real' way but are very low powered. CO2 guns are less realistic in the way you load them but are much higher powered and a lot more accurate.

The CP99 with the dot sight posted above would be pretty good for practical pistol.

Regarding air rifle shooting - I don't do it. I've had air rifles and ended up selling them all because I lost interest very quickly.
