have just started watching "dusk till dawn" and i just suddenly thought of something.
George Clooney has a tattoo that goes up quite high on his neck.

now have any of you got quite visable tattoo's and have they affected your jobs?

Someone I know is covered in tats, he was employed like that and then fired recently because of them looking unsightly. He threatened them with a lawsuit etc and I think they offered a decent payout.

Keep it in your shirt, you'll be fine.

I'd love a tattoo on the front of my neck, but I'll never do it, because the tattoo I have in mind would 1) Be really intimidating and 2) Destroy my career.

Keep it above the cuffs on your arms, and below the collar on your neck, you'll be fine.

From personal experience, I've suffered remarkably little trouble with my ears, actually. I dunno if you've seen pictures but they do stand out, you can't really miss them. No doubt sometimes I've been disregarded straight off because of my ears, but I've had two proper interviews for jobs (I mean office jobs) in my short working life, and I've gotten both jobs.

I always thought it'd be more difficult than that. But then, if you're right for the job, you're right for the job. The stigma is starting to disappear, which I think is good.

Are there actually any laws about tattoos, and being fired/not given a job because of them? What about piercings?

If it doesn't affect your ability to do the job they legally can't let that affect your chances, but you can't quantify that in reality. If someone didn't hire me because of my ears and I kicked up a stink, they'd just say 'we hired this other guy because we liked him better, not because of your ears' and that'd be that.

They'd be well within their rights to turn me down for a customer-facing postion though, imho. My ears offend some people, I'm aware of it, and I was aware of it when I stretched them, and I'm fully aware, and understanding of the fact that maybe I'm not the kind of guy who you want to be 'the face of your company'.

I'm going to work in hospitals when i'm done with uni, so yes it'd definitly affect my career if they were visible. The girls on our course aren't technically even allowed really visible highlights in their hair!

I have a tattoo running down the inside of my right forearm and I've never had any trouble in my office.

People ask about it quite often but I've never had any trouble because of it.

I think this is the way it happened with the guy I know. He's a machine operator (lathes and mills etc) but his work area became in full view of their customers.

a few guys at work have tats covering most of there upper arms, but as you said mohinder, as long as they are covered they are fine. tbh one guy i didnt even know he had any till he showed them the other day.

i work in the city and yet to see anyone at work with visible tattos. Think it would be frowned on as there very much about presentation and image. So i very much doubt they would employ you in the first place if it visble.
Same was as we are forced to where suits and ties at all times you could say its against our human rights that we are forced to wear a suit, hate wearing mine tbh but if your a scruff you get discplined.

Skysnapper, do you fancy coming round for a beer?

Edit: just realised it's 11pm. Dammnit

@ spike's

I got tattooed specifically so I could hide them from plain sight if I needed to.
There are some wierdo's out there who believe that tattoos are the work of the devil (or something equally silly), so around them I would like to display my tattoos. ;)
My tattoos are positioned on my upper arms/shoulders and back so a t-shirt will simply hide them. (most of them anyway lol).

Personally, If I were in the position of running a company, I wouldn't have a problem with tatoos as long as they weren't visble when dealing with clients. Piercings, I'd only be cool with something subtle and understated and probably ears only.

It might be an old fashioned and discriminatory point of view, but its just how I feel about them.

I have quite visible tattoos and although it has not affected my job I have become increasingly uncomfortable with them as I have got older.

The one I had on my neck is not so visible as I underwent laser treatment to remove it..........expensive and painful.

We happen to live in a society where these things are frowned upon in various stituations.

Its very sad cause many older civilisations totally accepted it.

Another one of those things that makes you wonder if we're going forwards or backwards :-/
