Hi,

I could do with a hand from some people who really know what theyr talking about, could someone explain to me how the following each work and how they work together in large scale network environment....

TCP/IP
DNS
WINS
DHCP

Im trying to increase my networking knowledge but could do with some assistance....in depth explanations are welcome)

thanks

Google or wiki would be more apporiate imho :o

Otherwise read a book for MS exam 70-291, covers all the topics below in resonable detail.

i didnt ask for other sources, I asked for someone who was feeling like they wanted to share their knowledge for some assistance, that way I can ask them questions back if I have any, its a bit hard to ask a book a question

and tbh people on forums are far more likely to explain it in ways I will udnerstand than some book written by some idiot whos never actually done networking they just read a book on it as well

so please, if your not going to assist then dont reply

expect the rest of the world to do all the work for you then, great. Some of us pay plenty to study this stuff at uni. You obviously can't be bothered though, not even to do some reading on it.

i already know some about each of them but i thought it might be easier for someone to explain from the start, books generally either expect you to know something already and if you dont your screwed or are so patronising its unbareable to read them

if someone would like to help then fine but i have better things to be doing than arguing over asking someones help

It's not that we don't want to help, it's just that the subject is just way too big. Nobody is going to spend a hour typing an overview, just so you can say "oh, OK, bye"

For each of those items you list,
there is a >whole book< that covers it

these people have books that explain them properly

If you don't really, really, really love reading techie books, then I.T. is going to be hard work

there is no quick way to this tcpip works

you many wont to buy a book like TCP/IP for dummys to start you off (no pun in tended)

but its very intresting to reed when you get in deth

There are whole books written about TCP/IP. But to sum it up. It's a big bunch of protocols that allow PCs to talk to each other. (to the expert, please don't jump on me for this, it know it's VERY generalised)

Look at the links ruffneck gave for DNS,WINS,DHCP,Netbios. You should at least undestand them if you know a bit about networks.

Um, so you missed this then?

wiki is your friend, you will find the basics 'in english' on there :D, if you want the advanced stuff then Im affraid your going to have to read the 'tech books'

but if you don't understand the basics then it will appear as if the tech books are in another language
