Teach me bangernomics please!

Oh it's one of those sellers, car's been maintained regardless of cost but there's a fault thats apparently easy/cheep to fix but it's not been fixed.

If the insurance isn't too expensive and your not doing too many miles a Prelude can be great but a lot will be starting to rust, mines got a patch on the on the bootlid by the keylock (Another common place for rust to start) though the sill's are fine atm.

Don't pay over the odd's for as some are as prices range from about 650 to 2.2k (dreamers) for a 2.2VTI

Yeah, I realise rust-free examples are getting few and far between now and pretty impossible to fix the arches properly without major work once it sets in. To be honest I could live with it had the rest of it seemed legit, but the guy wasn't even the registered keeper, selling on a PX from his mates garage yada yada yada.

Anybody got any suggestions in the bangernomics region of £750 for a diesel estate?

Thinking Volvo 850/V70, Peugeot 406 area, but not really got any thoughts beyond that.

Also, insurance wise, can anyone recommend any cheap places other then Elephant? That's normally where I start my quotes, but even for an old 850 estate (1998 region) the insurance is still £550 for a 30 year old in a relatively decent postcode.

Yeah they did a 2.5tdi by the looks of it. 406 seems to be a good shout, I'll check out my mechanic friend about them and see if he can find me a good one.

Any insurance recommendations?

I think the old 2.1Td is pretty much bombproof

No idea on insurance, it's all individual - other than shop around!

Smaller than the others you mention but Astra G estate has a useful boot for its size (I can get a washing machine in without touching the seats or the load cover and still have some room for odds and ends). If you consider it do not get the 1.9L diesel, make sure its a 1.7

Eugh, my mum has the Astra G 1.7dti and it is the slowest, rattliest, most uncomfortable piece of metal I've ever had the displeasure to drive.

However all that being said, it's bombproof, and costs peanuts to run/repair, so I guess it's a perfect candidate for bangernomics! :p

Exactly, not exciting or particularly refined but practical and reliable. I love mine (not a diesel) for those very reasons. Didn't pay much for it, with 7 months mot, and it just got a new MOT with £20 worth of advisories (doing the work myself) and a new set of wiper blades before hand :D

Heh, wasn't expecting to see this thread come back. Bought myself a nice clean '97 Prelude 2.2 VTI with 88k on the clock for £1200 in the end, back in October.

Thread is all Alex's now!

galant ftw, mega comfy v6 for bugger all cash, my old galant (ready for the scrap heap) has been sat since january, i started it up 2 months ago for first time, fired straight away on the first click...

i got a free galant for £0 off my cousin, v6, 122k estate. all the toys.. Sold it for 1100 :). Nice cars, woefully underpowered tho.

The 2.1TD is a bloody nuisance because it barely fits in the engine bay making even trivial tasks a right pain.

This is a good point actually, the 1.9 might be cheaper to service since it's easier to work on.

One other thing is that the 1.9 can run on veg oil as standard, but the Lucas HP pump on the 2.1 won't cope.

For reference, the quoted figures are 88bhp for the 1.9TD and 108bhp for the 2.1TD :)

A mechanic friend of mine has been putting a 2.1TD into a 306. I can't imagine that was particularly easy.
