I placed my home number and mobile on this list in January and in the last 24 hours I have had 2 calls from call centres. Last night I bit my tongue and said take my number off your list and don't phone again, today I let rip on the phone as it may be a simple thing but it ****** me off. The calls were from the same company.

Has anyone else had this after going on the TPS ?

Yep we still get the odd call getting through at home, even after being on TPS for a few years now.

I am tempted to set up an 0906 number and then give that out to companies, so that way you can just stick them on hold when they call and make a bit of money off them instead :)

This sometimes happens to us. The telephone preference service is good for those annoying companies in the UK, but abroad stupid service/offer hotline companies don't have the same restrictions on who they can call or not.

I believe TPS only applies to firms in the UK, so if it was India or somewhere else abroad, bad luck.

Yes, I ask them where they got my number as I will be complaining, this is usually followed by a *click* as the line goes dead. ;)

i think it does, if they trade in the UK/are doing it on behalf of a UK firm or soemthing im not 100% sure :)

i have heard of this, but i havent done it yet

We still get calls.. i thinks it funny though when you get a cold call and you say you are registed with TPS and they slam the phone down as quick as a friday night flasher!

I don't think the TPS applies to actual surveys I've been on it for ages and still get the odd survey

I also get a number of overseas Financial Consultants who simply can't believe I'm not interested in their fabulous share deals and can't seem to remember what financial qualifications they have.

Im also with the TPS and got a call from a company called Tulip 3G at 9:20pm one night (wakening my 3 week old son etc)

The indian guy spoke in broken english and said I had won a mobile phone, and it would be posted out the following Tuesday. I asked him where he got my number from, and told him he was breaking the law by calling me. He said he would forward me to his manager and the line went dead.

After checking the web, I found out about hundreds of UK people who had been ripped off (mostly old people who had been contacted by this firm whose offices are in london, but main call centre is based in delhi with a 1000 stong workforce calling 100's of UK landlines a day) - They usually get people on the phone to give out their address, send them a phone with a contract, and if they don't send the phone back within 14days - they threaten court action or ask them to pay £90 to pick up the phone etc etc - here's some peoples feelings about them here

I managed to their London based Office number and asked to speak to their sales manager, then gave off stink to him about them calling me. Then i sent a complaint to Ofcom about the call, and continued to call them about 10 times a day from my work, just for the fun of it. ;)

Nope it doesnt, it only applies if your selling something!!

I work for a research company, so be nice to the peeps on the phone...they are only trying earn some money not a mouth full of abuse!! :o

I have a simple responce to cold callers, 'can you hold on a second while I turn the cooker off to stop my dinner boiling over', press mute, ignore for an hour then go and hang the phone up.

I once did this, but went and sat down to eat my dinner, returned about 30 mins later to find the bloke still on the other end waiting for me ;)

At the end of the day, the people on the phones are just people doing a job. They generally don't know where the number came from nor do they have any way of dealing with complaints. It doesn't hurt to be polite and say "sorry, I'm really not interested" and hang up.

Anyway, isn't it optional for a company to use the TPS?

Still get the odd caller now and then despite the TPS. Usually from a withheld or international number (Caller ID 4TW).
As soon as you mention TPS they hang up if they are UK based. The international ones I just give them a standard reply of "You're trying to sell me something, but in order to get round the TPS regulations you're calling me from an international number so cheerio"
Does anyone actually buy anything from cold callers? I mean are you sat there with great big gaps in your house waiting for a double glazing company to phone you so you can say "Thank god you rang, I have been freezing my boobies off waiting for some glass put in these 'ere 'oles!"
The other option is make them go through the process of selling you a conservatory if you have some time to kill and then let them know you actually live in a 10th floor flat or something :)

Not so. It applies to all unsolicited sales and maketing calls, unless it is from a company you either have given permission to, or with which you have an existingrelationship. It does apply to charities and voluntary organisations, too, not just commercial ones, and if a company based in or operating in the UK uses overseas call centres, then that UK company must ensure the call centre follows TPS rules or they can be held to account for the call centre's actions.

If, however, it's a foreign company that doesn't operate in the UK, or a call centre calling for such a company, then there is no restriction.

Anyone cold-calling me is VERY likely to get a mouth full of abuse. My numbers are on TPS, are ex-directory and I'm VERY selective about who I give them to. So, any unsolicited caller pestering me is going to get a very unpleasant response, and I'm not upset at all about it. I do NOT want to be pestered by unsolicited commercial callers, for absolutely any reason whatsover. I don't care what it is, what the offer is, or what you reckon you're giving away, I don't want it. And I don't want to take part in surveys either.

So, if I can do my bit to make a cold-caller's day a bit more unpleasant, I regard that as a result. If I can get some cold-caller in tears, so much the better. Maybe they'll get a job for a responsible company that obeys the law.

If you don't want that response, DON'T CALL ME!

Not UK companies, or foreign companies operating in the UK, no. It's mandatory. Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
