Federer played top tennis in the first 2 sets. After that his level dropped. When he played Murray, he kept that level right up. Murray played well, but Federer's consistent top form was the difference. Murray could very well have beaten Federer had his form dropped a level like it did in the final.
No doubting though, that while Murray is a very good player, currently he does need Federer and Djokovic to be not quite on their top form in order to beat them. He seriously needs to improve his second serve if he is going to challenge Djokovic in the slams.
Even if he never wins another, he's had a good career so far for a British player. He's done much better than Britain's previous number 1, so far winning 3 times as many titles.
