Tell me about f10 and e60 520

precisely right, you sound like you have money burning a hole in your pocket and are just jumping on the shiniest shiney thing. Fix your car, get a warranty for it, job done :)

Thats some ironic advice from me and you there :D

Well I have a confirmed compatible gearbox that I can buy for £700. If it takes £400 (including oil) to fit it, am I better off driving it in the hope it doesn't die again or should I chop in my now working car for another.

The reason I suggested either the 535 or 730 is because that is what is at the dealers, so I wouldn't have to pick the car up, just leave it with them.

I'd be inclined to get it fixed & the chop it in asap.

It seems to me your set on a new car, regardless.

And opting for either a 535 or 730 simply because they are there and you don't have the hassle of sorting your old car seems - financially - crazy.

I bet the salesmen could not believe their luck!

The gearbox repair will be offset by the increased value of chopping in a car that works.

As said, take your time, and end up with what you really want rather than whats there at the time & convenient.

Just for giggles, I asked how much they would give me against the 535d. With a straight face, they said 2k. Mwahahaha. Guess I will be changing brands.

Did they say how much it would be worth if the 'box was ok - or was that it???

5k

Ok, now here is the really confusing part, they were quite surprised I didn't want the work done and the "paperwork" wasn't ready apparently, so I had to wait 20 minutes.

Anyway, I got in and turned the key, no more red light , popped it into reverse and no red light and reverse works

I just drove it 20 miles with no drama whatsoever:confused:

Checking the bill, it says they checked the fluid level, which to me says that they topped it up til it overflowed unless they used a boroscope. I wonder if this fixed the problem?

Checked or replaced? Fresh ATF can do absolute wonders for a transmission

Intermittent faults do properly suck though. You can either keep it and hope for whatever reason it went away, or try and punt it on while it is still working.

Autos are odd beasts. I've had transmission go properly wonky with rock hard shifts and limp home mode only for them to behave themselves for several thousand miles with nothing more than a hard ECU reset, but my general thinking is that if it has played up once it'll play up again, sooner or later.

Then they really were taking the **** with that offer. I'll give you £2001 ;)

But even £5k with a sorted 'box is a pretty impressive kick in the balls!

Well considering I could get 1k for the leather and 1k for the sat nav, I'm pretty sure I could split it for a whole lot more.

What to do now though. I do want a change, but what to get?

True, although breaking an E60 seems really weird, is it really ropey or something?

An E60 LCI still seems like a good bet, or perhaps something like an E320 CDI?
But look at Rilot and his impressively good value 730d. Worth considering..

Not ropey at all, its just worth chuff all to BMW dealers (I also checked with Sytner)

Breaking it for parts would probably net me 7 or 8k
