Tell me about: Subaru Impreza Sport

I was looking around on Pistonheads and Autotrader for sub £2000 cars, and was actually looking for things like the Citroen VTS 1.6 because insurance seemed to be best on one (from Bell, £1100 due to accidents), and I'd be keeping the car for about 2 years.

I spotted an Impreza Sport on a 97 plate for £1800 and thought for a laugh I'd see how much it'd cost to insure one...£1000 from Direct Line, Fully Comp, with both my accidents declared and 0NCB. It seems me being 21 (and a month) and having had a full licence since I was 17 and a half makes it possible for me to insure a group 13 car.

I'd like a car with some power, and the Subaru seems like a good choice, but I don't actually know much about them, other than they don't have a turbo. I admit, I could get a VTS for similar money and for about £800 on insurance, but the Subaru just seems a better choice.

I know I won't be able to get the/a car for a few months due to money (although having done a credit rating check thing online I could probably get a loan for the amount, provided I land a placement job), but I think I should research before committing, and I know one or two people have had the Sports on here, and more have had the WRX etc. :)

So yeah, how much should I be looking at spending on one and any other stuff I should be informed about?

:(

Problem is I'm after something that isn't a Mondeo, is under £2k (ideally), isn't French and is a decent size and handles well...not exactly easy to do...till I spotted the Impreza...but seems a bad choice. :D :(

The only place I would consider this was if you wanted an ordinary saloon and lived in the countryside where you might benefit from the AWD

Other than that it doesn't have any real advantage over any other saloon.

Well I tick living in the countryside, no real need for the 4WD, but surely it helps with handling etc. anyway?

Had a look at 306 GTi 6's? Maybe even clio mk1 16v/williams if your quite handy with a spanner ;)

Just seen you said not french... thats that out :P

Not overly keen on staying French. :p

I'd be more interested in a saloon/large hatch really, rather than small hatches, and want something that isn't going to break lots as I'll be on my placement year as of a couple months so want something reliable.

Maybe thread should have been 'What can I get for £2k?' with 'I found an Impreza Sport' as body. :p

:(

My hunt continues...which is ok, I have loads of time. :)

Was amusing when I put the WRX into DL's quoting system "We can't give you a quote on that." :D

EDIT: And not a fan of Mercs, especially with the W124 getting on for 13 years old for the newest.

Duhh, rather idiotic me put VTS...I meant the 1.6 VTR. :p

Was wondering why people were praising it. :D

I have a laydeeeeeee so don't need to impress...plus she doesn't want me having something 'big and powerful'...more reason to get the Impreza. :p

One of the major things I've got is that I'll be coming up from small cars with about 50-60bhp (if that) to something large with double (or more) the bhp/hp/whp/whatever it's called now and whilst I'd love something with lots of power I'm more after something with more power than I've had, is practical and looks good. hmmmm

I did look at Rover 216 and 220 Coupés, not too expensive to buy or insure.

InvG

Thats because they are crap! :p the 220 isn't "slow" but the standard brakes are absolutely abysmal. Reliability isn't a huge problem but you might want to buy shares in a bodywork company :p

Well, it is a Rover after all. :p*

I guess I should do a 'spec me' type of thread really, get more input, but it can wait for a bit. :)

Hopefully ScoobyDoo will be able to put some input into the thread though, I don't want to rule the car out entirely, unless £2k is too little for the car.

*I actually quite like some Rovers.

I know everyone else has covered this but I'm interested in quite what it was about the 114bhp Impreza Sport that 'seemed like a good choice' given you want 'a car with some power'?

It's in the price range, and is along the lines of what I'd like.

When I say some power, I mean one that isn't a 50hp Peugeot 205 ;).

What I'm used to is small French hatchbacks with little to no power, although two of them have had minimal weight which helped them move under the power they had.

Yes, I am hard work. :p

I did not know about there being a facelift (hence the asking about the car :p).

If I were to consider one properly, as in go out looking for only the Impreza I wouldn't relegate myself to just 97 cars, I'd go for anyone that is pre 2001 due to purchase price and also tax, although it is only a £25 a year saving going pre 01.

tbh the lower spec Scoobies just aren't fast, as that includes the 220bhp Turbo 2000's, but they are pretty capable in terms of grip and handling so I guess it depends what your priorities are and where you mostly drive.

Well for where driving, it'd take a lot of motorway use over the next year, and then after that wouldn't be driven a huge amount.

As for priorities, it's got space for passengers and stuff in the boot, and comes with safety features and driving aids, such as ABS, airbags, PS etc. none of which previous cars have had and I'm being pushed towards getting a vehicle with safety features etc. (by both gf and parents, obviously two accidents...one relatively minor bump...in three and a half years means I need to be in a bubble ).

Those are about the specs of my 1.6 Megane :). For 2.0l i would want over 150 BHP tbh, though looking at the insurance quote you have for it, the lack of power is probably the reason why it is cheap.

Yeah, I ran some other 2l cars through just now, Primera GT, 406 GLX and Galant V6, £1200 a piece, seems the Impreza is really lacking. :)

Having seen those quote I'll probably drop down to a 1.8 for my searching, as I want to keep insurance at £1000 or below. :)

InvG

Yeah, I think Direct Line want me, as everyone else is quoting like £200-£300 more on anything than they are. The fact I have two accidents (one being Jan this year) says to me insurance should be nasty, but it isn't with them which is really good. :)

InvG

If it only costs £200 more to insure the GT, I would go for it.

I mean 30 mins ago you were prepared to buy a £2k slow ass scoob, whereas a GT is a about £1k or less.

Not making much sense to me?

Very true, but I couldn't seem to find many/any Primera GTs for less than £2k (not on auto trader anyway).

I'm not 'prepared to buy the scoob', just considering options of which that was the first I'd found. :)

InvG

Hmmm, 2001 Honda Accord 2.0i VTEC...comes out with 144bhp and an insurance quote just shy of £1200...but under £2k for one doesn't inspire all that much confidence.

As for the Skoda, purchase cost is over budget really, as is insurance at just under £1500.
