Tell me about the F01 7-Series (Probably one for Fox)

ive currently got a 2010 730d having come from a 5.0 xf so will try and answer your questions

- in regards to checking spec the easiest way is with the vin. to find out the vin if you've got the number plate enter it into www.bmw-warranty.co.uk as if your doing a quote and it'll show you the full vin. from here take the last 7 digits and enter it into ww.bmwvin.com and it'll show you the full spec

-with the speaker package from what i can remember i couldn't find any concrete information in regards to which way it goes. from reading the American forums I believe it went something like standard- hifi- premium with b&o being introduced with the lci. mines got the hifi package and compared to my xf and the individual system that ive heard in a e64 6 series its not that bad for what it is. at higher volume the bass and voice aren't as clear as the others but its still quite good. if you want I've read that replacing the amp with the bimmertech amp is supposed to give a big difference and if you add the bavsound package its supposed to make it as good as the b&o setups found in other cars.

-surround view. I think this is a must as it makes parking the car a breeze and has saved me numerous times when I've got stuck in tight spots.

- ive not drove an xj yet although i was considering one but compared to the xf nav. the i drive is on a whole different level. if you don't really use the i drive much i think youd be ok with the jaguar system but if your constantly looking for different songs, using sat nav etc then the i drive cant be beaten. i found it distracting in the xf fiddling around with the touch screen trying to find songs or set up the sat nav while on the move. the xj supposed to be slightly better because of the bigger screen but i think its something you'd have to try over a week to see how you get on with it yourself.

-i don't know if its a big difference but if possible test drive a model that's got active suspension as i heard they drive a lot better. also if budget allows look at the 740d. the engines better plus the spec is generally better on them. I've actually been keeping an eye out for a decent spec 740d as considering upgrading to one.

if you have any other questions feel free to ask

The xf and xj really cannot be compared as I said before the xj is a work of art nothing else like it. Xf isn't.

Thanks for the tips flexo786. Most useful.
I've started looking at 535d 530d 640i and 640d models now too. The 6 seems to come with all the kit you want as standard so it's easier to find one in the right spec it seems.

have you drove both the xf and the xj?. if so is the infotainment system a lot better than the xf as ive not drove an xj yet although i am trying to. its just i was told the systems were similar so was trying to give my view based on that

XF is nothing like the XJ Really for infotainment. The XJ has the full 12.3" TFT cluster rather than normal dials. Gives you a totally different experience for the interface as a lot of the info is on the left of the cluster meaning you don't need as much touch screen interaction. Also voice control is reasonable and no silly things like 7 digit postcode as that's standard.

Well except the S Class, A8 and 7 Series. They are quite like it :p

No, the S-class (w221) is nothing like the XJ (I've driven both very extensively), they are extremely different cars in almost every aspect, apart from size. The A8 and 7 series look bland, so bland I'd never bother to drive one.

Yes I've driven both very extensively (diesel versions though). Infotainment aside, the quality and fit and finish of both cars is very different. The XJ simply isnt a big XF.

I get that you think the XJ is excellent. It is. But it's simply nonsense to suggest it's completely different to its key competition. A Jaguar XJ and a Lotus Elise are completely different. A Jaguar XJ and a Mercedes S Class are not.

And that is pretty much where the similarities end.

They drive completely differently.- XJ is fluid and Sporting, Mercedes is the opposite.
The design is different - mercedes is traditional whereas the Jaguar is contemporary.
XJ is aluminium mercedes isn't.

Have you ever driven them? Just because they compete for the same market doesn't make them the same product, they can go about it in completely different ways.

You are confusing differences in characteristics between similar products with being 'completely different'. I don't dispute your claims and I agree about the differences but where we disagrees is that I don't believe this makes them 'completely different' and I doubt anyone else other than you does either.

Its like me trying to argue the 5 Series is 'completely different' to the E Class because it handles much better, has a far better interior, blah blah. Yes, all of that is true, but the 5 Series is 'completely different' to a Nissan Note, not to an E Class.

This is a really silly argument about context. What jamoor was saying (which is clearly obvious) is that they are completely different ways of executing a saloon in that class. Really really not worth arguing about!

I had a momentary vision of turbotoaster being let loose on an XJ and had to look out the window to check my baby-waby was ok

OP put it well when he said its a head vs heart decision. The Germans have the better tech the Jag the better feel. I was sold in pretty much the first 2 seconds of sitting in the XJ and 3 years on still get that same feeling. Edit: photos.

But you're joining in anyway :D
