Tell me something i don't know...

The first man made invention to break the sound barrier was the whip.

The thread is about things he didn't know.;)

The sun gives off more energy in 1 second, than has ever been produced by man.

A few Atom fans here too I see. Superb series.

There are more Atoms in a single glass of water than there are glasses of water in all the oceans of the earth.

Io, one of Jupiter's moons, acts as a giant electrical generator, with 400,000 Volts across it, and a current of around 3 million amps flows between it and Jupiter's ionosphere. (apparently).

Edit: also, the last Great Auk to be seen in Great Britain was beaten to death with a stick for being a witch in 1840. The last sighting was in 1852. R.I.P. Great Auks :( :( .

All Champagnes are sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wines are Champagne.

There are over 120 different soil types in the Napa Valley.

After 8+ 'tastings' at a couple of wineries, the above statements are about all you can remember.

n

To add to that, Champagne, despite being white, is made up of 3 grapes - 2 black, 1 white. These are: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Fred Hitch's VC was discovered missing when he woke up in hospital after a fall and discovered it stolen as he carried it everywhere.

It later turned up at auction which his family paid to get it back and it is currently ( and likely permanently ) displayed in the South Wales Borderer's museum in Brecon, Wales.

Thanks von, yeah it was something like that. We had a big chat about it last xmas when Zulu was on tv. The rumour was that a family member stole it from Fred and tried to auction/sell it as he was desparate for cash.
I can't remember all the details but it was an interesting story.

When Disneyland had its first guests (supposed to be celebs and invited guests) on 17th July 1955 it was a collosal failure. Only 11,000 people were expected to arrive but over 28,000 showed up with many fake tickets. There was no running water in the fountains and the temperature reached 38 degrees. Paths has only been laid that morning and were still soft, a gas leak closed several areas and the day is now reffered to as Black Sunday within the company.

The first paying guest on July 18th recieved a lifetime ticket which was later extended to cover all Disney parks in the world.

Teaches this thread teaches.

Oh and the 'dogs can't look up' post. Wrong. Tested my border collie this morning. She definitely looks up without moving her head.

The US F-22 Raptor costs $150 million per unit making it the most expensive fighter plane ever produced.

By comparison, an F-14 Tomcat cost around $38 million before being retired in 2006.

all because they went from ordering 750 to 183 and banned exports ><
