Hiya,

I ordered a Western Digital WD2500KS 16MB SATA2 250GB from OCuk 2 weeks ago, and it has a faulty onboard temp sensor, so im sending it back for a refund.

In the meantime I bought a Seagate 7200.9 SATA2 16MB 250GB from OCuk, and just installed it today.

Im using it as we speak on a fresh windows install, but every so often I am hearing a really horrid sound, sounds like metal scraping together, its only every so often and lasts about 1 second if that.

Is it a faulty one? I literally can't believe it if it is...!?
Will the Seagate tools pick it up if its a head fault or something?

You, Sir, are the death of HDDs! :p

However, as previously said, use the diagnostic tool on it. If it is indead dead send it back and try again. :D

The hard drive is working fine, I cannot seem to get the noise to come back, but when I ran a seagate diagnostic this is what it said on the file structure result;

Bear in mind this is a freshly formatted drive with just XP on it and no further programs yet!

File Structure Test Result:

Partition 1 (NTFS (250 GB) ) Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
- One or more errors were found in the index
- One or more errors were found in metadata file records
- Other errors were found

NOTE: Any report of possible errors in the file system tests are for
informational purposes only. We suggest you should consider testing with
the official file system diagnostic utilities for your operating system.
Seagate is not able to assist with troubleshooting or reviewing
file system test results.

Does that indicate a borked disk?

I tried my old Hitachi, it also found errors with that, and that drive is fine so I'll ignore that.

It just did it again on loading windows!

I had my ear next to the drive and it almost sounds like a 'beep' type sound... Its so hard to explain :( and so unpredictable when it will do it.

If it's a scraping sound, send it back as it is likely to be head/platter crashing - then wait a few weeks before buying another one!

It seems to sound like a slightly different pitched bios beep! but its coming from the drive!

It could be something resonating inside the drive... or something is scraping/scratching something else and creating a high pitched buzz... either way it really shouldnt do that lol
