With this heat my pc is hot. Cpu isn't to bad today

But currently my HDD is at 38c and its minimum today was 35c.

Its one of These

What is the max temp it can be before i need to turn of pc to let it cool down etc before the risk of the hdd 'failing or not working as well' or what even happens

ta

Ah, sorry wanted to post before i went to eat :)

So as long as its under 60c theres no chance of it going wrong :D

I've seen people say you want to keep it under 30c and i know a lot of peoples are at 20ish.

Could do with putting a better fan at the front of my storm scout, it currently isn't taking in any air. For the moment ill just throw on one or 2 side fans to intake the air.

both of mine are at 36'c but this is ok (i think) can never be too peranoid with hdd's as they are theoretically irreplaceable :)
normally my old 160 gb has a much lower temp then the 400 but now there both the same!
one problem though is my 400 makes a slight ticking noise when accessed, not sure if this is vibration off the case, the screws are tight enough (all 2 of them :o) and its not the 'scatchy' noise that normally means dead/dying so is this ok?

What?? I'm sorry but whoever said that is in idiot lol Keep it under 30C? It's dead easy that the ambient temperature inside a case on a sunny day like today is 30C... 30C is "warm". If anything HDDs work better with a little heat. As long as you aren't getting 50C+~ then it will be fine, but as you can see your HDD can be pushed up to 60C without failure.

Currently I have...

2TB Samsung F3 Eco @ 30C
500GB Samsung F3 @ 27C
WD 1TB Caviar Black @ 35C

As you can see it also depends on your drive. If you have a 200GB 5400rpm drive then it will run very cool. If however you have something like a VelociRaptor @ 10000rpm drive then it could get quite hot. However, it's very unlikely either will approach anything close to 60C unless you run it 24/7 on load in an enclosed area.

35-40 is ideal, to quote a google study which is the biggest ever in terms of examining hard drive failures;
failures do not increase when the average temperature increases.
In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower
temperatures are associated with higher failure rates.
Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal
of this trend.

Much higher and you start getting issues, much lower and you do too, so keeping your hard drive icy cold (low twenties, high tens) is actually not a good thing, probably due to increased friction.

Its when your hard drives start to hit 70 degrees C that you have to worry. Thanks to raid, I have no idea how hot there running. Makes me feel better about it.

As stated already 35-40c is what You want. A friend has a 10year old system I built Him with a pair of IBM Deathstars :D running in raid, the fact they sit behind the front case fan is I'm sure the reason they have lasted.

Regardless of manufactures claims high temps will shorten any components life, Heat causes electronic component drift - causes drive inaccuracy - more scans re-reads - more heat etc etc
