Temps for HDDs

Hi Guys,

I've got quite a few HDDs in my case. A total of 5 which fit nicely into my PC-70 case which holds 6 in a row.

How hot should I be letting these get?

Reason for asking is my PC is crashing left right and centre. I've taken almost all the clocking off and its still crashing.

Thanks again all.

I've got a couple of Maxtor D/Max 10's and speedfan reports their average temps at 29 o C

Your Raptors are high performance drives, and tend to run hot.

Check out your drive temps using speed fan - if you submit your findings using the online service, it will give you a detailed breakdown of any problems your drives are encountering, along with recommended temps for that drive, and their actual temps.

Available here

Max for any HDU is about 55C. 40-45C is what you will see with little airflow and 30-35C with airflow. Remember, the lower the temps, the longer the drive will last.

Mine have been hitting 48-53 in this heat. I don't like using my comp in this heat so I use the laptop which runs much cooler :)

How are you measuring the temperature of your drives? The only reason I ask is that Speedfan keeps reporting my drives(3x200gb Maxtors) as being somewhere between 52-59C when none of them feel particularly hot.

Usually I get mine from the maufactuer's tools but most programs offer an accurate report. Speedfan reports the corrct figures for my drives as does Lavalys.

I doubt a hot harddisk will cause crashing, it can however die faster.

Maybe the crashing is related to another component overheating like memory or mobo chipset?

I've just put a house fan against mine as they were hitting high 40's-mid 50's and:
1) Seagate 200GB: 36degrees
2) Samsung 80b: 38Degrees

160GB Samsung - 38 degrees
200GB Samsung - 42 degrees

The 160GB is directly above the 200GB with a floppy drive above the 160 with no airflow over any of them.

I've got three hard drives, though speed fan only returns the temps for two, they are:

HD1: 52
HD2: 51

Do you think I would need to look into lowering these temps?

Also, do you know why it won't show the temp for my other drive "Seagate 320gb SATA"? It does detect it in the "S.M.A.R.T" tab, but for some reason isn't displaying a temperature.

I would try and get them to low 40's. Mine used to hit 54 but I've stuck a standard house fan infront of them and the temps stable at 38 :-P

Yeah, my case at the moment is in a wodden box type area fitted on the bottem of my desk with an open area on the front, so basically no ventallation at the back.
Pondering on whether to buy a new case, though I never checked the temps of my HD's when the whether was cooler than it is at the moment. Still a bit worrying nonetheless, probably got worse since I got my third HD.

Westerndigital 300 gig - 38
Baracuda.10 - 42

No idea why they are that hot seeing as the case has a 120mm fan at the front!
