Temps for HDDs

From Speedfan:

Your hard disk is a HDT722525DLAT80 with firmware V44OA96A.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 36C (MIN=27C MAX=46C) and yours is 45C.

Your hard disk is a ST3200822AS with firmware 3.01.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 39C (MIN=27C MAX=52C) and yours is 56C.

That's not good... Room temp 28.5C

 I would seriously worry if mine went above 50, maxtor drives tend to run hotter but mine has never been over 48, my western digital on the other hand has never been over 38

Like most built in / on board sensors, take the SMART temps with a pinch of salt.

I have two WD drives in a rack in front of a slow moving 120mm intake fan and was concerned that one was reading 12 / 13 degrees higher than the other.

I used an external thermal probe to check the temps at three locations on the HDD sides they are actually within half a degree of each other.

For perspective, current readings with a 28 degree room temp:

WD1200JD 38 degrees in SMART, 34.9 degrees on the probe
WD2000JS 52 degrees in SMART, 34.4 degrees on the probe
