Temps OK?

Is it today your amanda is coming? Im eargerly awaiting your results :D
It is! Got it delivered to my parents as they have a B&B and so are always in! Will be leaving work to get it in a bit so hopefully will have it up and running by tomorrow.

Only possible problem i foresee is that i'm in the process of buying an evga 680i and may be tempted to wait for that to arrive!

I'll let you know though! Can't wait to see how it performs! :)

Well it's in but there seems to be no improvement in performance compared to the ninja! Idle temps are identical and if anything the load temps are higher with the Amanda. Hopefully the temps will settle as the compound beds in but i'd be amazad if it improved by any more than 2 or 3 degrees!

On a plus side it looks cool and runs incredibly quietly!!! :D

Here's a pic:

I'll post updates as and when i have them!

Mmm, Thats strange i was under the impression that the Amanda was the daddy of air coolers. Just out of curiosity what temps are you getting idle/load and at what volts?

Ben

My 6600 idles at 29-30 with a Zalman 9700 at 3.2 Ghz. Having said that, a lot depends on the room temperature, how cramped your case is and what type of cooling fans u got in your case.

This chip's been a bit of an awkward clocker so it's on 1.48v. Idle it's giving around 46/47 but load under orthos is getting close to 60.

Gonna see if i can keep it stable at lower volts and if that doesn't help i'll reseat it! I know some e6600's run hot but this is ridiculous! :p

The TEC's basically on non stop too it's crazy!

As for cooling there are two 120mm x 38mm panaflo fans blowing over the HDD's and over the mobo. Plus there's two Xilence 92mm fans extracting air out of the side blowhole situated opposite the GX2 shown in the pic i previously posted! The Amanda is blowing straight out of the rear blow hole at the back of the case so airflow's fine as far as i'm concerned. Temp in the room is 19 degrees C.

FOR 3.2 gHZ your putting in too much volts in there. about 1.39-1.4 is more than enough for 3.2 Ghz, and that is why idling at 46/47. At 1.5 I get 3.5-3.6 Ghz and its not a Week 29 chip.

One more thing. Have u put too much as5 or thermal paste? coz putting a thick layer will actually trap heat between the cpu and the heatsink.

Is your IHS totaly flat or is it one of those concave ones, im thinking of lapping my Ultra 120 as the base finish isnt the best no where near as smooth as my VF-900 :( Might do a re-build when i recieve those fans etc. I might as well lap the heatsink at the same time ;)

Do you know any good lapping guides gt_?

Agreed, had it that high while i was clocking yesterday and when it began to reach it's limit i throttled the clocks but not the volts as i was worried it would become unstable.

Looks like it was more to do with the volts for my ram than my cpu!

Dropping it bit by bit and now at 1.43 with no problems. Idle's at around 39-40 and full load looks to be 51-52 which is better! Had it at about this level with the ninja.

Thermal paste was a concern as i used the nano stuff that came with the Amanda. I usually use ceramique and had planned to put a thin line down the length of the IHS where the core would be. I did the same with the nano and wonder if a thin coat over the entire IHS would have been a better idea!

The chip is lapped by the way Ben and it's a week 28B.

Set 100% load in TAT and your temps will go higher, did you lap the chip yourself or did you buy it lapped?
Bought it lapped from ted34 if you can find him to ask! I believe he sent it away to be done. It's a good job and is perfectly flat.

I know w3bbo did his to a very nice finish (pretty much a mirror) so it may be worth talking to him!

Funnily enough TAT @ 100% reset the pc with the voltage @ 1.48 :p

I'll give it a try now! :)

Ok let me know how you get on, lol im too scared to lap my CPU, might have a go at the heatsink tho ;) Whats your method for applying AS5? (Assuming thats the stuff you use)

I use ceramique which is very similar in terms of quality and is also made by Arctic Silver! With my X2 and Opty i used to spread the compound evenly over the core and i did that with the e6600 when i first fitted the ninja.

But then i saw on the Arctic Silver site that a thin line up the center of the IHS of the C2D was recommended. I tried that with the Nano compound that came with the Titan but i don't think it's worked that well!

When i get my new EVGA 680i on tuesday/wednesday i'll use my original method and let you know! ;)

It might just be that the compound isnt as good as the ceramique but im using the thin line up the center of the core method and my temps are higher than I expected, but that could be to do with poor case airflow. With my case side off my CPU temps are about 6-7oC cooler. When i rebuild early next week i might try spreading the AS5 over the core as you mentioned:) Also did the 100% load in TAT crash your PC?

Ive also noticed your running Orthos on Priority 1 IIRC that wont stress your rig as much as 9 or 10, just a thought :)

No crash. Ran fine! Went to 57 degrees C though. Orthos at priority 9 got to 52 degrees C which i was happier about!

Think i'll leave it till i get the EVGA board and them see what happens with that!

Let me know how you get on with your case airflow and temps! ;)

Will Do! If you dont mind me asking how much did you get the 680i for? Also what volts are you running for those temps? I found a thread on OCUK earlier and someone had a 6300 or 6600 and they were getting high 50's idle(Scythe Ninja), tried everything(lapping the IHS etc.) , he dropped it into a 650i board and it went down to 35 idle on the stock cooler  Maybe its a DS3 problem  You'll be able to find out when you get your new board anyway :)

I saw that too!

Got the 680i for £100 delivered which is ok! I'm running 1.42v now with temps not passing 51 in orthos and 58 in TAT @ 100%.

I'll let you know... would be nice to drop 5 or 10 degrees but if i lose 15 that would be amazing!

Ive re-built my rig since those fans arived and made it a bit neater :)

It's a lot quieter too and the CPU temp has dropped 3oC, the GPU temp is still the same without the side fan :D I also changed my Ultra 120 round so it blows air straight towards the exhaust ;) Tis' a tight fit
