Tempted to change my 36GB raptor

Been looking at the Samsung SP2504C 250GB drive and tempted to get one, but I only use my current raptor as an o/s disk.

So the question is do I. Get another raptor and set-up a RAID strip for the O/S and use the Samsung drive for storage..

I'm going from a 36 gig raptor to two 250GB Seagate 7200.10 16mb SATA2 drives next week, I'll let you know how I get on

Be interested too I have a 36gb Raptor 8mb cache but I am going to get a Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB instead maybe 2 and set up raid..?

Need to have a read up on Sata2 to see what benifits it bring actually

The Seagate 7200.10s look to be the better drive.

Funny you should say that I have just been reading up about them after seeing your post and they do seem to perform better than the WD...!!

Will order one Thursday for a rebuild at the weekend, let us know what you make of them though

Edit: just ordered one of these, may keep the Raptor as my games drive

Sorry for double post but am I right in saying the jumper has to be removed from the Seagate 7200.10s to enable SATAII?

correct, just yank out the jumper on the back of drive when get it, I did, works perfec

Lol indeed but I'll be keeping my Raptor drive and loading all my games onto it COD2, BF2 etc etc.....

So it's not going for a holiday just yet

I went from a 36gb Raptor to a 250gb Maxtor SATA-I. Barely noticable difference, infact I didn't notice any.

The 36GB Raptor (8MB cache) was actually a slow raptor and could only achieve 45M-50MB/s average read (whereas a normal 7200rpm drive can hit 55Mb/s average). It only really improved on seek times. The more modern raptors with 16MB cache are FAR superior and definitely do have a difference.

Yes they are superior but noisy. My one is killing me and I have it in a silencer :mad:

Yeah seems great so far, but its only a storage drive for me, no essential/quick access needed data on it,I use 2 74gig raptors for windows/games, seems a great drive though, very nippy

u use your raptor for storage?? i use mine for Windows and other apps and normal 7.2k for storage..

mmm i have a 250gb 7200.10 drive.

makes NO noise at all and its very speedy

Gonna get another 250 soonish.

What silencer do you enclose it within? I'm thinking of getting one for mine to stop it rattling the case.

No the seagate drive I was refeering to. Raptors on mine run windows and games.

raid is completely and uttrely pointless, unless you are using it in a server with more than 5pc's accessing it at any one time
