Because the training and lifestyle to maintain any decent level is relentless, you are battering your body and mind non stop. kinda stops being so fun when you’ve been in the spotlight for 30+ years.I never understood the talk of retirement. It's not like there is something to protect for him, Nadal, Murray etc.. They are already and will continue to be talked about for decades to come.
Why retire if you're enjoying playing. Same with Stan Warwrinka who is still paying but retiring this season. If you enjoy it might as well keep doing it, given it's only a short year career.
Novak is still the 3rd best player in the world, despite playing less tournaments than much of the competition. Yes, typically he's going to lose to Sinner and Carlos, but has an excellent chance against anyone else on tour.
