Tennis

I know Novak is a bit of a divisive figure, but you have to respect the man's sheer fighting spirit. An absolute gladiator, even though he looked like death warmed up. Fonseca definetely one to watch for the future. Very, very impressive.

Well if Zverev doesn't win this then he probably never will win a slam. If he can't without Sinner, Carlos and Novak in it then it will surely affect him even more mentally than it seems to now.

If he plays like that nobody is stopping him. But keeping that level through a tournament would be insane. I've not seen enough of him to know what happens if his game is a little off - can he grind through games?
I watched him at the Madrid open against Rafael Jodar, both just smacking it so hard. He took the first set but Jodar started to get on top and Fonseca folded a bit in the final set.

Not seen loads of his matches but I guess being pretty young hampers getting far in some big matches/tournaments.

I think it's down to the type of tennis played.

My worry with Fonseca is that he doesn't play with any margin and if he's off he loses.

Nadal is the ultimate example of the other end of the spectrum - he would hit the ball more than 7 feet higher than the net, with massive top. Coupled with his athleticism, he'd never miss, and he was impossible to hit past. Even when he was playing badly, he had that in his locker so he was still very hard to beat. When he played well, he'd add some incredible forehand passing shots, but basically his success was built around margin, spin and athleticism.

Players like Fonseca play with so much less margin - he was skipping it only a foot or two over the net, and hitting lines. Playing like that, if you're a fraction off your game, you lose. What isn't clear is how Fonseca copes when his game isn't working.

Incidentally, that to my mind is the problem that Emma faced. She won the US Open in an absolute golden patch - everything was going in - but she played so flat that when she lost a bit of confidence her game fell apart. She's now trying to put it back together with more margin and safety, but has basically had to go back to square one to do that.

The joys of having multiple coaches with different styles and outlooks on tennis.

I think that's part of it, but equally I think that generally hyper aggressive tennis doesn't tend to win tournaments, especially nowadays with the balls and courts. She needed to develop her game to have any chance of sustaining her success. Unfortunately that hasn't gone very well.
