Terror Plot Foiled

It's probably just because they have nowhere to put them if they land.

On BBC Breakfast this morning they had a camera on a chopper at Heathrow and the taxi ways to the terminals already looked like they were backing up, so I suspect you're right.

Most airports have massive restrictions and delays.

Lufthansa have cancelled all flights to the UK.
Brussels airport has cancelled all flights to London airports.

Don't belive it for a moment, it is all part of the government's plan to control every aspect of our lives. We have all just witnessed them crank it up another notch and, sadly, I doubt they will ever crank it down again.
I do find it a bit weird and propaganda-like however evidently they've been working on this thing for a while, which would be pretty big and certainly justify 'severe' so maybe there's not such a need for the typical cynicism....most people wouldn't have a clue about the alert level so it doesn't really qualify....but yes they are politicians so I expect they'll milk this for all it's worth :/

Hopefully the "intelligence" they used on this occasion is better than on all the other occasions where they got it miserably wrong.
Indeed. However the nature of their job means they don't often shout about their work, so we only see the public side (police action.)

I wouldn't like to do their job. Ever :/

Edit: Buy buy buy

UPDATE 2-US raises threat level for all commercial aircraft

(Updates with details on security threat overall)

By Todd Eastham

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - The U.S. government said on Thursday it had raised the security threat level for all commercial aviation in coordination with security measures undertaken by Britain, which said earlier in the day it had foiled a plot to bomb aircraft traveling to the United States.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the threat level for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom would be raised to "severe," or red, the highest U.S. threat level and an unprecedented move for the United States in its war on terror.

The security threat level for all commercial aircraft operating in or destined for the United States would be raised to "high," or orange, from "elevated," or yellow, Chertoff said in a statement. The threat level for the country as a whole remained at yellow, according to the department's web site.

Homeland Security was taking immediate steps to increase security measures in aviation in coordination with heightened U.K. security precautions, Chertoff said.

"Over the last few hours, British authorities have arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States," the statement released by the DHS press office said.

British police said they had thwarted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight between Britain and the United States and had arrested more than 15 people.

In response, Britain's security services raised its threat level to "critical" from "severe," the highest of its five ratings, suggesting "an attack is expected imminently."

"Currently, there is no indication ... of plotting within the United States," Chertoff said. "We believe that these arrests have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted."

"Consistent with these higher threat levels, the Transportation Security Administration is coordinating with federal partners, airport authorities and commercial airlines on expanding the intensity of existing security requirements.

"Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane. This determination will be constantly evaluated and updated when circumstances warrant," the statement said.

"These changes will take effect at 4:00 a.m. local time across the country. Travelers should also anticipate additional security measures within the airport and at screening checkpoints."

I beleive that in the public safety this is all justified.

And to those shouting conspiracy, get a grip.

You'd be the first shouting at the government if they didn't stop them and a plane was blown up.

Pathetic paper shuffling!

They've uncovered a plot to kill hundreds of innocent people, I think thats good enough reason to be extra vigilant.

We're just keeping an open mind at this point.

The government and the security services have shown time and time again in recent years that they cannot be trusted, that they lie and that they have been wrong.

If someone keeps crying wolf and lying to you, it becomes hard to trust them wouldn't you say? :) If I and others are sceptical then whose fault is that - it isn't mine.

My Mum is flying to China today but I just spoke to her and it looks like she isn't going anywhere.

Every single flight has been cancelled at the moment and it's total chaos inside the airport.

Did you not forget about the buses and trains that got blown up?

If you are skeptical then i would say its your own fault because you should damm well know that terrorists hit places and we have all seen them do it.

I also remember the non-existent WMDs in Iraq. If the security services and the government can LIE about something like that, and LIE to the public and parliament about going to war then believe me, there is nothing that they cannot and will not lie about :)
