Tesco & Fuel...

Also to stop people calling the free Mini call out service when they stop on the hard shoulder with no fuel? That last estimated range can't be that accurate?
And to stop a lot of bad press in general 'Minis dying by road side in new epidemic'

It's just not safe to take any car right into the fuel light red zone?

Just seemed odd to have something like described in a handbook compared to other vehicles.

No idea why you would want to run a Clio on 99. I know my Cupra says 98+ must be used or it will make less power.

How much less it doesnt say. Either way it get 99 everytime no questions asked.

.... its a Clio 172, not exactly the normal clio.
It says on the door, 98 recommend.
Did you ignore the thread?

I'm still keen to know where all this sediment comes from? :p

Back in the old days it used to be rust in the bottom of the fuel tank (at a guess).

Ourdays, well, people must be chucking in soil or something.

How do you get rust inside the petrol tank?

That's like getting legionella inside the biocide container.

Rusts from the outside in (top of tank), rusts after the car has been in storage for years and years, fittings upstream of the tank rust and bits fall into the tank.

Meh, all this talk of filling up as soon as the light comes on. I filled my motor up today a couple miles after the miles to empty went to zero. Filled it right to the brim (like proper to the brim), and it "only" took 67.9 litres (that'll be £97 thanks), so still a couple litres left then, or another 15-20 miles.

To be fair, I don't do it every time, and today was only because the station I was going to re-fuel at was closed, so that was an extra 20 miles or so to the next one. But never had a problem, and often leave it pretty low, down to 10-20 miles to empty is common.

Still, 610 miles tank. I always like it when my tank miles starts with a 6... Means my tank average starts with a 4 (40.8 mpg average in this case, on BP Ultimate Diesel).

The Jag says in the handbook first the light comes on, then the range goes to 0, then the engine pretends to misfire to make you think you're about to cut out, then it stops once it starts to actually misfire. But you can restart it and it'll struggle on while misfiring until totally dry..
It also gives quite specific volumes of fuel left at each of the stages.

Haven't you got a 520d? Seems a bit low. Mostly town driving?

As Fox has said, I have a 530d, so not too shabby. I also aint the slowest driver (but neither am I the fastest). I do a lot of motorway driving though (usually over half of each tank), and I find that sitting at 75 on cruise all the time isn't actually the most economical (65 on cruise aint bad, but dull as dishwasher. Then again, closer to 80-85 not on cruise seems not too bad either).

In fact, I was on a run today, filled up just off the motorway, and was motorway pretty much for the next 160 miles (round trip to Ikea, so there was a little off motorway / retail park, then took a more scenic route on the way back, so another 50 miles of A road / passing through town), and averaged around 42 mpg on that route.

Now, considering my old mans 320d only averages around 47 (about the same as my Passat 1.9 TDI), so a drop of 7 mpg (roughly, over the last 4k, of 9k total on the car so far, my 530d has averaged over 40 for every tank) for the extra horses / smoothness of the 3.0 is a worthwhile trade off.

Oh yeah it DRZ with the 520d. I almost hit 700 miles on the last fill up. Though it was half long motorway runs

Yeah, usually over the first half a tank the combination of MTE and miles done makes it look like I'm heading for 650-675 mile tanks. By the time I get to the pump though, usually floating around 600.

But it is getting better. 9,000 miles in and a consistent 40+ mpg. I'm quite happy with that, considering it's the same as my 2009 A4 Avant 2.0 (143), and better than my 177 A4 avant, and my 335d (but that's to be expected I guess).

Anyway, that's all diverging from the original thread. On a closer point, the last 3 fill ups have all been with premium diesel products to see if they make any difference to the fuel economy. The first being V-Power diesel. No noticeable improvement in tank range. Next up was BP Ultimate diesel. Again, no noticeable improvement (well, 1.3 mpg better). Car filled yesterday with Esso Premium Diesel. So will see what the range I get from the tank is. But looks similar.

To be completely fair though, the BP ultimate tank, which did get 1.3 mpg more (having worked out I need something like 2 mpg better to break even on the extra cost), that tank the car did get a couple of proper spankings, which it normally wouldn't get (trips to hospital). So maybe that's good enough.

my 530i mpg starts with a 2 :( and for first 2 fills ups its ended in a 2 aswell.

Yep. Hence I wonder why so many people on here are ALL about that 30i engine, it's like it's all anyone recommends when someone is looking for a motor, and doesn't give a preference on car / engine. I'd always recommend the 30d, for the similar power figures and much better fuel economy.

If we're talking diesels here now (530d for xs2man), i've tried Shell's expensive Diesel for 3 tanks full, and then normal Jet diesel (whatever brand they use).

47MPG was gained using Shell, yet 49MPG is what i'm getting on Jet's bog standard stuff.

Getting around 570miles per tank (57L) of 20min commute through mostly 30MPH and 5mins of 60-80MPH in a 330D xDr.

And I drove it til I dared drive it no more when the fuel warning came on. Ended up filling the tank with 56.6L at the pump... !

I love my N57 engine - almost as good as my N55!
