Tesco & Fuel...

I run my car (207) on either Shell V-Power Nitro+ or BP Ultimate and get good performance and MPG. I filled up a few weeks ago with Tesco's/Sainsbury's cheap stuff (127.9p/Litre) and the car almost felt ill. Went on a long trip (150 miles) and the car felt like it was going to stall when pulling away from traffic lights. Filled up with V-Power, and it has been fine.

I don't know what could have caused it, dodgy batch maybe, but there was definitely a difference.

I find pretty much the same in my previous 335d and current 530d though.

Come off it, there is no way the diesel is as quiet and refined as the petrol. It just plain isn't. I've got both remember

I prefer to comment on average fuel economy over multiple driving styles, like a cross section of motorway, town, A and B roads. Like this :

Erm, as had I up until a few weeks ago. My Range Rover was a V8 afterall.

I don't find my 30d particularly loud, and it feels refined enough for my driving style. Peoples opinions are different remember.

I don't find it particularly loud either, but it's just rubbish to say its quiet and refined as a 530i because it blatantly isn't. It's a great engine, better in ways than that in a 530i, but those ways don't include NVH.

The -30i and -35i (guessing 30i here) are very quiet and refined, but can go very loud and in-your-face if you wanted it.

The 30d sounds like a petrol on tick over, and on full chat sounds pretty damn impressive - maybe the extra gears in the F30 make the aural delight that little bit more extended and lovely?!

I think it's more a case of newer petrols sound a bit diesely on tickover and the 30d sounds less diesely than any other diesel.

I have the same gearbox

And I agree that it actually sounds good at full chat. Don't get me wrong, I like the engine - its very good!

But it isnt as quiet and refined as the 30i. If it was I wouldnt even have bothered trying to find a petrol one because the non-sound-and-refinement aspects of the N57 are simply incredible.

That wasn't a motorway, it was outside a school, I'm not gay or owt. I use my car unlike many people. Ive done 60K miles now and I think 38mpg-42mpg is 'normal' average for it. If I spank it hard I can get it easily into the teens too, which is proper. I don't really comment on fuel consumption as its irrelevant to me, what does mean more is seat time compared to standing at fuel pumps, which after 108K in a B7 RS4 is quite important.

Ha ha, 40 mile school? That's quite impressive size. Huge in fact.

Yeah, I get what you're saying re seat time to pump time. My B6 S4 wasn't exactly great on fuel, but then neither were the 330i, V6 4mo, Golf GTI (stage 2 1.8T with live map), etc. etc. At least the S4 had the speed to make it "almost" worthwhile. As would the RS4 no doubt. But it is nice filling up knowing you won't have to do so again for another 600 miles, rather than 300.

Now I have some good tyres on it, suited to the car, it's about as good as I need a car to be. Great car, like mine lots and ideal for a daily ****er.

My Goodyears RFTs are crap, can get the back out on a damp roundabout with the TC on at normal speeds.

Seems a bit odd that, I need to be pushing mine to get the TCS to wake up. I hate them because they are noisy and spoil the ride. Grip wise they seem ok.

I am happy with the AS2's on this car, suit the car well, good compromise. Michs feel better and grip better, but for everything else, noise, ride, comfort the AS2's are better.

If you weren't looking for other wheels, and have the room to store them, then just swap the tyres round.

I did that with my 335d. To be fair, I bought new wheels and non-RFT's, but put winter tyres on the standard wheels, and kept the RFT's until it was time to trade the car back.

I have Goodyear excellence RFT's I think on the F11, and I don't mind them at all. So the car will probably wear them until they are down to around 5mm, then I'll swap the tyres round.
