I spotted this on the bay a few days ago, and I thought it was worth buying :). I thought some people mind find it interesting so I've put it up here!

It's a Test PS2 that developers used to make sure their games worked. Due to its nature, it has no region locks, and can play unmastered disks. It weighs about twice as much as a normal PS2, probably due to the 40GB hard drive it has.

Here it is:

And compared to a normal PS2:

It's a model number DTL-H30001 E / PS2 Test debug (EU/AU). I tested it by putting a Japanese copy of FFVII in, which booted perfectly. I then tried a burned CD-R of the American Xenogears, which also booted perfectly.

I've ordered some US only PS2 games that never got released over here like Xenosaga I and III, which will be interesting to play :)

Ok, I obviously get the no region locks, and that's a good thing, but what's an 'unmastered disk'? And is being able to play them going to be of any use to me?!?!?

Just thinking about picking one up to play FF X, but obviously these are expensive compared to just picking up a PS2 so trying to decide on the advantages aside from it simply being cooler than a PS2!!

Oh, and on the auction site, the listed item has no mention of a HD, but to be fair, the seller doesn't seem to know much about the item...
Are all 'test' stations going to have HDD's and bearing in mind the limited capabilities of the PS2, are they of any practical use to a gamer....

Sorry for all the Q's, but I'm a geek and if I can convince myself I 'need' one I'll get one :p

Basically copied/downloaded burned onto discs, but no discussion of that allowed here.

The hard drive isn't a standard feature so if he didn't mention it it probably doesn't have one; it's useless anyway for the average person. I can't do anything with mine.

I use mine to play American PS2 games and also it's just cool :p

It was probably crammed on a desk with a bunch of monitors and other test kits and then had controllers flung at it from the frustration of frequent crashes. Then for the last few years, stuck in a random cupboard. They're tools, not much more.

There are slim test PS3's now too, aswell as the big old fat ones and the dev kit which is nothing like a PS3 in shape or size.

The 360's XNA kit looks rather funky but the regular 360 test kit is as boring as the regular console.

you could have just chipped a normal ps2 for a lot less and still do all that, chipping consoles is not illegal, you are allowed to do whatever you want to your own property. its other peoples property you cannot do stuff to without their permission.

you should download hdloader :) just burn it to cd and you will be able to install your games to the hard drive, it makes the loading a lot faster and its nice not having to swap dvd if you want to change game
