Texting with Stop Start Engine

Anyone do this?

My wife seems to think it's acceptable to sit at traffic lights texting when the engine turns itself off.

I on the other hand think it's reckless and should be treated the same as texting whilst driving.

I did a search online to see if anyone else has asked this, but mainly got pick up lines.

I fail to see the difference if its running at idle or the engine is stop.

A manual car you have to put car in first and engine will start. Let foot off brake and engine will start in an auto, some need throttle.

Essentially the same outcome for those situations as anything that prompts the car to move make no odds if its stop start or not.

Traffic? So a queue of cars that move, sometimes flow will be controlled by traffic light. Yeah i can totally see why you dont need to watch the road in that situation.....

The person in control of the car is the driver, by the book they should not be using a phone when in control on the road.

Legally its wrong, as already discussed.

However, I for one think its ********. If your stationary, texting is fine. I'm sure, going by this thread, that I'm goin to have a million scenarios and arguments thrown at me, but the reality is this - I could text without being 'eyes down' for more than a couple of seconds at a time. If a 2 second delay is dangerous, why do we allow all these doddering old women to drive, as they can take markedly longer than 2 seconds to get thier **** together after the lights change?

What's the big deal, the car is stopped, what possible danger can it cause? You might miss the lights change and have the driver behind honk at you, nobody is going to come to harm because of that now are they. Missing emergency vehicles? Don't think so, they have bloody loud sirens on them.

What I find so annoying is when you are stopped, texting your mate whilst eating a greasy burger which then drips all over you because you are unable to protect yourself with the other hand due to texting.

Also so hard trying not to look like a spastic when changing gear and steering with your elbows due to greasy hands and phone in hand!

Sureley common sense should prevail? imo if you're the person in the drivers seat and you are using a phone in stationary traffic its still illegal and deserves points if caught. I dont think its 'reckless' however I can see how the Police would justify this, as this term 'reckless' can be used to cover a multitude of sins!

I admit in the past I have done this when waiting at lights :(

I miss phones where you can feel the buttons so you can text without looking.

It's a lot harder with touchscreens :p

I could try and use the voice recognition though but my northern slang will make my phone explode :(

I would imagine this is a textbook definition of careless driving ... "a standard which falls below that of a prudent motorist"

Considering that failing to indicate or being in the wrong lane are examples of this, playing with your phone on a road whether stationary or not mean you aren't focusing on the traffic lights. Clearly not appropriate, irrespective of the 'danger' that may or may not exist.
