Texture quality or AA ??

Agree with Guest, Since going to 1440p I hardly use AA as you don't really see any difference.

In terms of performance, it's a lot more pixels to push around -

1920x1080 = 2073600
2560x1440 = 3686400

You are talking almost twice the amount compared to 1080p, but when you go 1440p upwards you will never want to go back.

I would say that it should be ok to handle most things, I would expect you to be getting a little more than a single 290x depending on the rest of your pc.

I've not used AMD since x1900xtx but based on reviews i've seen you should be fine.

Just an example for Crysis 3 in 1440p, no AA all very high settings on a 670 would average 30fps on the first level. Adding another 670 took it to 60fps average

Going to 1080p on a 27" screen looks shocking so prefered to play with lower settings

It would do, anything over 24" @ 1920x1080 is too big, PPI starts to fall resulting in poor quality.

24" @ 1920x1080 = 91.79
27" @ 1920x1080 = 81.59
27" @ 2560x1440 = 108.79

Not sure why the sli stuff would help. I'll have a look at 1080p FPS compared to 1440p FPS tonight

Saying that I can cope with 1080p or 1024x768 in window mode because it doesnt stretch then. I play MK3 online in 1024x768 and it looks fine (but small)

A few quick Heaven Valley benches. GPU was not at full load in parts on 1080p 0AA so can only presume this was CPU limited

1080p 0AA 4320/103FPS
1080p 4AA 3949/94FPS
1440p 0AA 3485/83FPS
1440p 4AA 2752/66FPS

aa is normally the only setting i have to drop, i'd take high textures+noo aa over the reverse any day. the thing annoys me is the lack of higher res textures being an availability, i'm talking like studio textures, even if no computer today can hack it it'll look great in a few years time.

that said, i have different standards to you guys as to what i consider a 'playable' framerate, i've seen 30fps locked games play smoother than games with 60fps solid. i dont know what it is or why, but it seems framerate and percieved smoothness and quality arent the same thing

Nice to know there's not a massive difference between 1080p 4xAA and 1440p nO AA :) thanks for doing that for us

Hopefully with the new game engine Unreal engine 4, Unity 5, Source 2 engine & Cryengine we will see higher res textures being used more with their better rending technology.

I've have played with some game engine messing around with 1k,2k,4k textures and seen quite the difference.

I'm not so sure of the process but i think artist need to create native 1k and 2k textures separately, instead of it being unscaled.
